“There’s no way they’re not clashing”

The possibility of Hanshin infielder Teruaki Sato (26) challenging Major League Baseball in the U.S. could suddenly emerge as early as this offseason. With less than a week until the team’s camp opens on February 1, contract renewal negotiations with the club remain undecided.

Sato has been pushing the team since the 2024 offseason for a future posting to pursue a major league challenge.

“It became more concrete after he signed with an agent. Last season, after winning two titles in the Central League, he was eager to push things forward, and even in casual conversations with the media, he increasingly spoke about the majors. He no longer hesitated to mention his MLB aspirations during interviews, so the team’s public relations staff became wary, thinking, ‘This might be serious.’” (Sports reporter covering Hanshin)

Sato postponed his scheduled public self-training on January 24. There is still no clear path to contract renewal, and entering camp at his own expense seems inevitable. On January 27, he visited the Hanshin clubhouse at Koshien Stadium and told the press about the current situation:

“We’re not clashing. We’re having proper discussions. Everything’s going smoothly.”

“There’s no way they aren’t clashing. If negotiations were really going smoothly as he said, the contract renewal would have been completed long ago. Yet Sato is showing a firm stance, willing to attend camp at his own expense if necessary.” (Same source)

From January 29, some of Hanshin’s key players arrived early at the camp site for joint self-training, but Sato did not participate. This confirms that negotiations are proving difficult. Why is Sato maintaining such a bold stance at this stage?

“The club side, which originally didn’t intend to give an inch, is gradually softening its stance.” says a local TV network reporter covering Hanshin.

“After all, the posting rights are controlled by the team, so there’s no reason to concede to Sato. The team also has players like Hiroto Saiki (27) and Daichi Ishii (28) who have expressed their intention to challenge MLB, so they can’t set a precedent favoring players here.

However, the club has a reason it can’t completely reject Sato’s demands: they are wary of a drop in merchandise revenue, which ranks among the top for the team. Previously, Sato-related merchandise was released around the March home opener or Koshien opener. Now, because of strong sales, it’s not uncommon for products to go on sale starting from March’s open games.

With so much turmoil, there’s a high possibility that sales could be affected. Naturally, Sato’s side understands this and likely believes, ‘There’s still room to negotiate, and eventually the team will have to give in.’” (Same source)

The “Sato-teru Frenzy” shows no signs of stopping.
