Masahiro Nakai Speaks Out for First Time in Over a Year—Reveals Key Turning Point
Reports Updating on His Recent Life Since Summer
Former SMAP member Masahiro Nakai (53), who retired from the entertainment industry on January 23, 2025, following issues with Fuji TV, attracted attention by granting media interviews for the first time in roughly 400 days.
According to Josei Seven, released on January 6, Nakai was spotted in late December enjoying about two hours of shopping at a department store with his current girlfriend, with two-shot photos published. Reporters approached him after the shopping trip, and Nakai politely responded to their questions.
“Since Nakai has already retired from show business, he could have refused the interview if he wanted. That he stopped to answer shows his characteristic demeanor,” said a sports newspaper reporter.
When asked about returning to the entertainment industry, Nakai replied:
“I’ve never thought about it.”
After retiring, Nakai has led a relatively private life. However, since last summer, articles frequently reported on his movements—driving alone, participating in charity work, and even expressing enthusiasm about attending WBC games—highlighting his activities for some reason.
“The major turning point was definitely Fuji TV’s stance. When Kenji Shimizu took over as president after Koichi Minato stepped down, he initially stated that he would not rule out any possibilities regarding a lawsuit against Nakai, hinting at potential compensation claims. However, after the June shareholders’ meeting, the tone softened to handle cautiously in the summer.
In the end, Fuji TV filed a 5 billion yen compensation claim only against former president Minato and former executive director Ryo Ota. Nakai effectively avoided any large-scale claim. Around that time, articles about Nakai’s activities started appearing frequently. Within this context, his first interview roughly one year after retirement naturally stirred attention in the entertainment industry,” said an industry professional.
Fans and industry insiders alike are closely watching Nakai’s future.
On YouTube, FRIDAY Digital’s Entertainment Reporter Channel features active entertainment journalists discussing Nakai in the video titled, “Masahiro Nakai Finally Speaks After 400 Days… ‘Why Grant the Interview?’ ‘Any Comeback to Showbiz?’” The program explains in detail why Nakai agreed to the interview at this timing and what his future activities may involve.
