“Here we go!”

—or perhaps it was “Ouch.” At the filming location, raising his right hand high and slightly grimacing was Yuji Oda (58).

In early December, filming was underway along the Sumida River in Asakusa (Taito Ward, Tokyo) for the movie Bayside Shakedown N.E.W., scheduled for release this fall (hereafter Bayside Shakedown). The series began in 1997, and this marks Oda’s first time starring in the film version in a full 13 years.

“Filming for Bayside Shakedown started in October last year, and still photos from the set were released. One scene shows Oda, playing Wangan Police Station detective Shunsaku Aoshima, running through the middle of Shinjuku, Tokyo, chased by about 400 extras while carrying a large bag. His youthful appearance, belying his age of 58, became a hot topic and instantly raised fans’ expectations,” said a film magazine reporter.

A few days later, this site also spotted filming for Bayside Shakedown, witnessing Oda running through Takanawa Gateway City carrying a large Boston bag. Another month passed, and this time, at a location shoot in Asakusa, he was filming alongside his new co-star, Shuri (35).

“Shuri’s appearance was reported in Josei Seven Plus on October 29 last year. Although it hasn’t been officially announced yet, she plays a sharp and strong-willed female detective who works together with Aoshima on investigations,” said a sports newspaper reporter.

The scene being filmed showed Shuri handing Oda an anpan as a snack while he was on stakeout, and the two eating together. After receiving the bag, Oda happily peeked inside, then enjoyed canned coffee and anpan together with Shuri. Standing side by side, they almost looked like a father and daughter.

After that, Oda moved on to filming a scene in which he walks alone through a crowded area. During a break, he raised his right hand high and furrowed his brow, as described at the beginning. Rather than a triumphant fist pump, it looked more like he was stretching to ease physical fatigue.

Filming wrapped up on December 29 last year. On the official SNS, an image of Oda holding a bouquet was posted, and the comments section filled with messages such as “I can’t wait” and “I’m so excited for the release.” Then, on New Year’s Day this year, a video of Oda was uploaded. Wearing the iconic “Aoshima coat,” Oda appeared, offered New Year’s greetings, and said:

“Bayside Shakedown N.E.W. will finally be released this fall. Please look forward to it.”

There is no doubt it is already shaping up to be one of this year’s most highly anticipated films.
