Daigo of “Chidori” is becoming the new leader of variety. Many of his regular terrestrial TV appearances are as an MC, and he also appears in major commercials such as “Lake” and “Fabreeze.

Is he in rising demand as a new charismatic figure in the comedy world?

The December 19, 2013 broadcast episode was the final episode of “Sake no Tsumami ni Naru Hanashi” (Fuji Television Network).

The episode was scheduled to air on October 24, but was replaced at the last minute because Daigo (45) of “Chidori,” who was serving as the MC, was seen as having a problem with his cosplay of Hitoshi Matsumoto (62). Since “Chidori” was taking over as MC until Matsumoto, who had announced a leave of absence due to reports of sexual assault, returned, “Chidori” was not satisfied with the fact that Matsumoto’s cosplay had been nixed, and offered to drop the show. This decision was supported by TV people who called it “manly” (a producer at a key station).

Matsumoto has resumed his activities on his own platform, “Downtown Plus,” but has yet to return to terrestrial broadcasting. Meanwhile, Daigo is said to be in increasing demand as a new charismatic figure in the comedy world.

At first glance, Daigo may seem intimidating and difficult to approach, but like the late Ken Shimura, he has many senior comedians and industry insiders who love him. He is good at getting into people’s hearts, so he has a great ability to be loved. In “Aiseki Shokudo” (Asahi Broadcasting Corporation), he teases even the senior comedians without regard, but he makes them laugh so hard that even the senior comedians enjoy the show.

Daigo is in charge of planning and producing “DAIGO Project” (tentative title, scheduled for distribution in 2014), the first original variety show from Japan on “Disney Plus. The duo also worked on “Netflix’s” “Talk Survivor! (Netflix) and “Strongest New Combi Determination Battle: The Golden Combi” on Amazon Prime Video.

Chidori” has a strong impression of Nobu (45) as a likened tskkomi, but Daigo is an all-around player who can both tskkomi and lead the group. In the Heisei era, many “children” comedians were born under the influence of “Downtown,” and it is fair to say that Reiwa’s version of them is “Chidori. The Okayama dialect with “〜ja! at the end of words has spread to the general public. Like Matsumoto in the past, there are many TV people and creators who want to use Daigo, and he attracts attractive projects for both distribution and terrestrial broadcasting.

The fact that Daigo had his teeth straightened after moving to Tokyo has also borne fruit.

Daigo had a strong “yakara” look when he was in Osaka, but now that he’s a little plump and has better teeth, he has a gentler, cleaner look. It is significant that he has become more approachable to viewers. She was once caught on the spot cheating on her husband, but she turned it into a laugh, and since the COVID-19 crisis, she has been free of scandals. Now that he no longer has to worry about his personal life, sponsors can use him with peace of mind.

Daigo’s position appears to be secure for the time being, with no threat to him in sight.

If we had to name a rival, it would be Morita Tetsuya (44) of “Saraba Seishun no Hikari” (Farewell, Light of Youth), but he has not yet reached the point where he and his partner Higashi Bukuro (40) have many prime-time shows together due to their strong image of female scandals.

Reiwa’s variety show “Daigo Muso” is likely to continue for some time.
