Late-Night Access to Pills How the Drug Sandwich Man in Shinjuku Kabukicho Became a Local Sensation
Appearing in Kabukicho Every Night
Since the beginning of autumn, reports have emerged that sandwich men have been appearing around Kabukicho, advertising that they can buy drugs nearby. According to tips received by Friday Digital, these men appear every night, approaching passersby and promoting products like Manjaro and Viagra.
Upon visiting the area, they were quickly spotted. The signs worn by these sandwich men advertised the clinic’s services. The front of the sign read: “Morning-after pills, low-dose pills, STD testing, Viagra, diet (Manjaro),” while the back prominently promoted the popular Manjaro.
Manjaro has recently gained popularity as a so-called weight-loss drug. It is said to suppress appetite, making weight loss easier, and many people have sought it out. Originally, Manjaro is a medication for type 2 diabetes, but under private medical care, anyone can receive a prescription.
The clinic appears aware that Manjaro is being used for weight loss and sells it accordingly. Prices vary depending on dosage and quantity, but a single 2.5mg injection costs around 7,700 yen.
When prescribing, the clinic reportedly explains the proper method of administration and potential side effects such as nausea or diarrhea. However, it is unclear whether buyers fully understand and follow these instructions.
According to the sandwich men, the clinic primarily offers online consultations and operates from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM. While in-person visits are accepted, most customers come to purchase drugs. When asked who buys the medication, they noted: “Mostly women, and many are foreigners.”
Going to a Hotel with a Crush and Needing the Pill
“Many women approach us asking for morning-after pills or Manjaro. Most foreigners are after Manjaro,” said one of the sandwich men, adding, “I’m just doing this as a side job, so I don’t know all the details.”
There seems to be significant demand, with a few people being guided to the clinic every night. With the sandwich man’s consent, a reporter followed to see who buys drugs in Kabukicho at night.
One female customer, asking for a morning-after pill, explained her reason:
“I just needed it immediately I was with a guy from the place I like at a hotel, and I realized I needed the pill. I was worried if I could get it right away, but I happened to see this sign and approached.”
This is a very “Kabukicho-like” situation, reflecting the urgency of the street. In this area, many people likely find themselves in sudden sexual situations and need immediate access to emergency contraception.
A group of three Chinese men approached seeking Manjaro. They were considering buying it for resale.
“We heard we could get Manjaro. It’s popular in China as a slimming drug. We plan to buy it in Japan and sell it in China.”
In China, cosmetic and weight-loss awareness is high, and many use drugs for slimming purposes. Manjaro is also sold online, and buyers like these men likely export it.
Unknown Side Effects Pose Risks
Around 10 p.m., a woman approached the sandwich man seeking Manjaro. She explained that she uses it regularly to maintain her figure.
“I work at night, drink alcohol, and have after-parties, so keeping my body in shape is tough. A friend recommended Manjaro to me. I checked Instagram and saw it said you can lose weight easily, so I decided to try it. I can lose 1–2 kg in a month.”
She has been using it for about two months. When asked about her health, she said:
“I get an upset stomach more easily, but I’ve always had that problem with alcohol, so it doesn’t bother me.”
Regarding Manjaro, which is officially approved for type 2 diabetes but widely used as a slimming drug, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare commented:
“Even when used correctly, Manjaro can cause side effects such as vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal pain. Improper use could lead to unknown side effects and potential health risks. When used appropriately, its safety and efficacy are recognized.” (MHLW, Pharmaceutical Safety Division)
Manjaro remains popular in Kabukicho, with many people buying it. While correct usage is generally safe, in the nightlife district, people purchase it for various personal reasons. Even if health issues arise, unless the sale is illegal, responsibility falls on the user.
The sandwich man continues his nightly rounds in Kabukicho.
