Former Prime Minister Kishida Stirs Global Buzz by Calling Perry Partner

It has come to light that U.S. pop star Katy Perry (41) and former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (53) went on a double date in Tokyo with former Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida (68) and his wife Yuko (61), making headlines worldwide.

The outing highlighted not only the deepening romance between Perry and Trudeau but also the surprisingly close relationship between Trudeau and Kishida.

On December 4, Kishida posted a photo of the four together on X, writing:

“Former Canadian Prime Minister @JustinTrudeau visited Japan with his partner, and we had lunch together with my wife and me.”

The phrasing drew attention, as Perry was referred to as Trudeau’s partner. Kishida also noted their longstanding ties:

“During my time as Prime Minister, we met several times and worked together on initiatives such as the Japan–Canada Action Plan. I am delighted that our friendship continues.”

Trudeau quoted Kishida’s post on his own X account, adding:

“It was wonderful to meet you. Katy and I are very pleased to have had the chance to speak with you and Yuko. Thank you, Fumio, for your friendship, your commitment to international rules, and your continued efforts toward a better future for all.”

The New York Post reported:

“Justin Trudeau enjoys a glamorous double date in Tokyo as romance heats up,” noting that Perry and Trudeau had taken their relationship to a new level.

Perry is currently holding her world tour, “The Lifetimes Tour,” and on December 3, she performed in Japan for the first time in seven years at Saitama Super Arena. Prior to lunch with former Prime Minister Kishida, Perry and Trudeau visited “Asakusa Sumo Beya ANNEX” on December 1, where they enjoyed a sumo performance and had a meal inside the venue.

The couple was first spotted on a dinner date at a restaurant in Montreal, Canada, in July this year, sparking rumors of their relationship. In October, photos of them sharing a passionate kiss on Perry’s luxurious yacht were reported by a British newspaper, confirming their relationship.

Later, on October 25, they appeared hand-in-hand at the historic Paris cabaret, Crazy Horse, to celebrate Perry’s 41st birthday, openly acknowledging their romance. Most recently, Trudeau accompanied Perry for her Japan concert, and the double date with former Prime Minister Kishida and his wife in Tokyo suggested that their romance has deepened even further.

Meanwhile, Trudeau’s double date with the Kishida couple and his praise of the former Japanese prime minister’s international sensibility have also attracted attention.

A Nagatacho insider commented:

“During his time as Canada’s prime minister, Trudeau faced disputes with President Trump over issues like tariffs. On the other hand, Perry publicly supported Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in last year’s U.S. presidential election against Trump. Given these circumstances, it’s reasonable to speculate that Trudeau and Perry want to maintain their relationship with former Prime Minister Kishida, who considers himself a conservative-moderate, in the context of the Takaichi administration’s reputation as an ultra-conservative government advancing unusual military expansion under Trump’s influence.”

Amid heightened tensions with China following Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s statement in the Diet that a Taiwan contingency could constitute a threat to national existence, the Tokyo double date with Perry allowed Trudeau to subtly emphasize, as he did in his X post:

〈The importance of order based on international rules and continued efforts for a better future for all people〉

In any case, with Perry being officially recognized as Trudeau’s partner by former Prime Minister Kishida, the next step toward engagement may now be imminent. The future developments of their romance will continue to attract attention.
