DeNA Cheerleader Aki Bids Farewell After 5 Years of Lightning-Fast Spirit

“I feel like I gave it my all.”
“Speedy Cheerleader.”
There’s a woman fans call by this nickname: Aki, a member of the Yokohama DeNA BayStars’ official performance team diana. What draws attention to her is her extraordinary speed. Aki, a fan-favorite with a cult following, made a major announcement on her birthday, August 20: she will be graduating from diana at the end of this season. Here’s her explanation:
“I feel like I’ve given my all with diana. I’ve kept our motto, ‘Always Full Swing,’ in mind, and I feel I’ve completely burned out my energy.”
Aki became famous for the “Hisense Hamasta Battle,” a 3-on-3 relay race held after the bottom of the 4th inning during games at Yokohama Stadium, open to fans of all ages competing against diana. In high school, Aki ran 50 meters in 7.1 seconds, earning her the role of anchor. As of September 29, she holds an astounding record of 153 wins and 59 losses.
“Opponents are chosen from fan club members with tickets, either through preliminaries or a lottery. Right before the start, I sometimes feel they look fast, but I run with the strong determination to never lose. Back in spring 2023, when the Hamasta Battle first began, I experienced my first losing streak. I cried backstage because I was so frustrated.”
Aki, a native of Yokohama, joined diana in 2021.
“My parents were BayStars fans, which inspired me to aim for diana. After going through the audition, my dream came true. I had admired the glamorous performances since I was in the marching band in junior and senior high school. Performing at my beloved Yokohama Stadium for five years has been amazing. I’m truly grateful to the fans and the team.”
The “Goddess of Ham” who captivated fans with her full-speed sprints and cheers is now passing the baton.
