From August 21 to September 7, the play Shindo 3 was performed at a theater in Shimokitazawa (Setagaya), Tokyo. Among the renowned actors such as Yoshiyoshi Arakawa (51) and Moka Kamishiraishi (25), SUPER EIGHT member Ryuhei Maruyama (41) also gave a dedicated performance.

“Thanks to Maruyama’s presence, the audience included a noticeable number of young female fans. The play was written and directed by Masaaki Akahori, who is known for his ensemble dramas that delicately portray the subtleties of everyday people. This is Maruyama’s second time appearing in an Akahori production, following his starring role in Paradise in 2022. Once again, he skillfully played a good-for-nothing character and captivated the audience,” said a theater insider.

We happened to encounter Maruyama one night in late August, about a week after the performances began. After the curtain fell, he left the theater alone and headed to a bar in Shimokitazawa known as a hangout for theater people.

“I did a double take when I saw him. With his hunched back and cigarette in hand as he walked into the place, he looked more like a stage actor than an idol. That bar is famous as the spot where the late Toshiyuki Nishida passionately sang If I Could Play the Piano before his passing in October last year. Maybe Maruyama was enjoying karaoke there with his fellow actors,” said a customer drinking at a nearby establishment.

Around 2 a.m., four hours after entering the bar, he stepped out briefly to buy cigarettes at a convenience store. Returning shortly after, Maruyama ended up drinking until morning.

The next day, after the show ended, he went straight to a well-known local yakiniku restaurant with staff members. Once they had filled their stomachs, they moved on to a bar in Shimokitazawa. A few days later, he was seen hopping between the same yakiniku restaurant and a hidden bar in Mishuku. Night after night, Maruyama was making the rounds in the Shimokita area.

Around the same time, SUPER EIGHT member Yu Yokoyama (44) was in the final stages of training for the 24-Hour Television 48: Love Saves the Earth charity marathon (NTV). While Yokoyama was running a literal marathon, Maruyama was captivating audiences with his performances on stage and sharing drinks with fellow actors once the curtain fell. He ran his own kind of Shimokita marathon, night after night, without missing a step.
