The first trial of a man charged with abducting a high school girl with suicidal tendencies and engaging in non-consensual sexual acts with a minor was held at the Chiba District Court on August 7.

A 41-year-old man who took a high school girl around for four days

“I’ll come to you. Let’s die together. I’ll throw everything away and go.”

In response to the 15-year-old high school girl’s plea that she wanted to die, the 41-year-old man immediately took the Shinkansen to Tokyo.

“On May 16, 2025, the Chiba Prefectural Police arrested Jun Suminaka (41), a resident of Aichi Prefecture, on suspicion of abducting a minor. Suminaka allegedly lured a high school girl, A (15 at the time), whom he had met via SNS and knew had suicidal thoughts, and from May 13 to 16, took her around and kept her in hotels, committing the abduction.

On the night of the 13th, A’s mother filed a missing person report, and surveillance footage led police to Suminaka. The prosecution indicted him on June 6 for abducting a minor and subsequently added two counts of non-consensual sexual acts,” said a national newspaper reporter.

On August 7, Suminaka’s first trial was held at the Chiba District Court.

Entering the courtroom with a shaved head and silver-framed glasses, Suminaka wore a large mask that concealed his expression, though he was occasionally seen closing his eyes intently.

The indictment and opening statements read by the prosecutor revealed Suminaka’s utterly selfish behavior: instead of admonishing A about her suicidal thoughts, he proposed to a 15-year-old girl that they die together.

“Earlier, around early April 2025, Suminaka and A had met as fans of a female VTuber group through a random chat app that allows anonymous communication with multiple users. They exchanged Instagram and LINE IDs and began communicating. Suminaka disclosed that he was 41, married with children, and living in Aichi Prefecture, while A revealed she was 15. They met in person once in Tokyo on April 23.

In early May, upon learning that A was thinking about suicide, Suminaka sympathized, saying he would die together with her. On the night of May 12, they kept a LINE call connected, and when A said on the morning of May 13 that she couldn’t take it anymore, Suminaka proposed, ‘Let’s die together.’ They met around 2 p.m. that day at Akihabara Station.”

“Since we’re going to commit suicide anyway” He had sex without using contraception

During police questioning, A explained her reasons for running away from home:

“At school, I was struggling with many reports, and my parents said things like, ‘You seem bored at home, so why don’t you get a part-time job?’ which made me feel very stressed. I told the defendant about this and planned to meet on May 31 to die together, but I was already in a state I couldn’t endure, and the defendant said, ‘Shall we die sooner than planned?’

Then, around 7 a.m. on the 13th, the defendant said, ‘I can’t wait any longer. Should I come to see you?’ and I said I wanted to meet him. That’s how we met at Akihabara Station.”

In police questioning, Suminaka also described how he came to think about dying with A:

“Through our interactions on the app, we developed mutual feelings and started dating in mid-April. Afterwards, A talked about her suicidal thoughts, and since I have lived without clinging to life, I thought I would die together with her.”

On the morning of the 13th, Suminaka called in a day off from his job and took the Shinkansen to Tokyo to meet A, as described above.

When they met at Akihabara Station, A was still in her school uniform. They checked into a nearby hotel so she could change, and immediately, Suminaka sought sexual activity.

“When we were alone at the hotel near Akihabara Station, I tried to have sex. A requested contraception, but I thought that since we were going to die together, there was no need to worry about whether a child would be conceived, so I had sex without using a condom,” Suminaka reportedly stated during the prosecution’s investigation.

Regarding this sex without contraception, A did not consent. The prosecutor emphasized this point:

“After meeting on the 13th, the defendant attempted sexual activity at a hotel near Akihabara Station. When A requested contraception, he persuaded her by saying, ‘Since we are going to die anyway, there’s no need to worry about contraception,’ and had sex without using contraception. He continued to have sex without contraception thereafter.”

The outcome of the suicidal escape

The two traveled from Akihabara through Sendai and arrived in Aomori City. On the 13th, they stayed in Sendai, and on the 14th, in Aomori, where they reportedly had sex at the hotels where they stayed. Around midday on the 15th, they took a taxi toward Jōgakura Bridge, which they had decided would be their suicide site. However, A said, “I’m scared to die. I want to stay together a little longer,” so they returned to Aomori City and stayed in a hotel.

Around noon on the 16th, police found the two in Aomori City, and A was safely taken into protective custody.

During the trial, the prosecutor read part of a statement from A’s mother. Even if her daughter had run away of her own accord, she expressed a strong desire for strict punishment of Suminaka:

“I don’t know whether there was consent for sexual activity with the man who kidnapped her, but I believe that for an adult man to engage in sexual acts with a 15-year-old girl who cannot yet make proper judgments is itself a crime. I hope he is severely punished for that.”

Suminaka admitted to all charges, saying, “That is correct.”

Random chat platforms allow people to communicate anonymously and casually with those they normally wouldn’t interact with, which may provide temporary emotional relief.

However, at the very least, it is crucial to exercise caution when someone knowingly invites you to meet in person while being aware that you are a minor.
