In late June, the morning platform of JR Asagaya Station in Tokyo’s Suginami Ward was bustling with commuters. Just before a train arrived, a woman came running breathlessly up the stairs—actress Riho Yoshioka (32).
This was actually a scene being filmed for an NHK night drama scheduled to air in November.
&#8220;Details like the title and plot haven’t been officially announced yet, but it&#8217;s said to be a dual-lead series with Nana Mori (23). According to some reports, the drama is based on a popular manga set in Asagaya and gently portrays the everyday lives of young people struggling with a sense of unease in urban life. Yoshioka plays an office worker caught up in work stress, while Mori plays a college student attending an art university and aiming to become a manga artist,” says a TV magazine writer.
Filming took place on a Saturday, using a platform where trains don’t stop. Still, the opposite platform had many bystanders watching the scene unfold. When Yoshioka ran up onto the platform, some could be heard saying, “Is that Riho Yoshioka?” and “Wait, seriously?”
Wearing an office-style uniform, Yoshioka appeared to be portraying someone about to be late for work. She wore an anxious expression and repeatedly shot scenes of darting nervously across the platform.
&#8220;Yoshioka is also starring in the film Kowloon Generic Romance (directed by Chihiro Ikeda), set to release on August 29. It’s also based on a manga and is a mystery love story set in the former Kowloon Walled City in Hong Kong. She appears in a cheongsam in that one. Yoshioka’s strength lies in her wide acting range—from a regular office worker to a mischievous heroine. Expectations are high for both roles,” says a producer from a key network.
Yoshioka and Mori also co-starred in last year’s film First Kiss: 1ST KISS. Their chemistry promises to be a major highlight once again.
