Sho Sakurai Faces the Ultimate Test as an Actor Ahead of Arashi’s Final Tour

A role with many lines suits him well
The national idol continues to devote himself to acting even today.
Shortly after 1:30 p.m. in late May, standing with a solemn expression in front of a certain building in Chiba Prefecture was Sho Sakurai (43) of Arashi.
His body was wrapped in chains, and his face bore numerous wounds created with special makeup. It appeared to be during the filming of the July-season drama Hōsōkyoku Senkyo (Broadcast Station Occupation, airing on Nippon TV).
The series is a suspense drama in which Sakurai plays a detective confronting an armed group. It’s part of a popular franchise that began with Daibyōin Senkyo (Big Hospital Occupation) in 2023 and continued with Shin Kūkou Senkyo (New Airport Occupation) last year. Entertainment reporter Chikako Komai analyzes:
“With his sharp intellect, roles like those in the Occupation series—where there’s a lot of dialogue—suit him well. Also, his ties with Nippon TV run deep, not just through dramas but also as a newscaster on news zero and general host of THE MUSIC DAY, among others. He’s a principled person who values relationships and gratitude, so he’s well-trusted by the staff.”
In May of this year, Arashi announced that the group would conclude its activities with a final tour next spring. What lies ahead for his solo career?
“He began acting alongside Arashi’s group activities and already has over 25 years of experience. I think he’ll continue balancing acting with MC work even after the group disbands. He’s consistently appeared in at least one drama a year in recent years, and the quality of this current work will likely influence future offers. He must be giving it his all,” the same source adds.
Not as an idol, but as a solo actor—his true worth is now being put to the test.
