Female students in attendance cheered, “Mai-chan!”

Sitting upright under the eaves of a retro wooden house, her gaze looking up pensively, a woman with a refined and elegant demeanor. She is actress Maika Yamamoto (27).

On this day in mid-May, filming for the currently airing drama “Nami uraraka ni, meoto biyori” (Fuji TV) was taking place in Katori City, Chiba Prefecture, and many onlookers were captivated by her beauty.

The drama is based on the manga of the same name by manga artist Nishika Hachi. Set in prewar Japan in the early Showa era, the drama is a romantic comedy that carefully depicts the newlywed life of Imperial Navy lieutenant Takimasa Ebata and his wife Natsumi. Yamamoto plays Fumiko Yoshimori, a modern girl who is a single typist and Natsumi’s friend.

Next to Yamamoto was Yuta Koseki (29), wearing a suit and with his hair styled sideways. Koseki plays Ryunosuke Fukami, a lieutenant in the Imperial Navy and a colleague of Natsumi’s husband, Takita. He is a handsome, elite man who is good at his job, and unlike Takita, who is inexperienced in romance, he is a playboy who is popular with women.

The two of them seem to be having a conversation under the eaves of a house. Koseki, who plays Fukami, is smiling throughout the filming and in between. On the other hand, Yamamoto seems to be completely immersed in the role, with a serious expression. Even in between takes, he only relaxed a little when Koseki spoke to him with a smile.

However, just as the camera stopped, a group of female students who had been watching the filming intently up until then waved and said, “Mai-chan!”, and she waved back with big smiles on her face.

A couple’s rendezvous is likely to occur

“The Sawara district of Katori City, where the filming took place, is a town that flourished as a transit point on the Tone River. Known as ‘Suigou Sawara,’ the townscape from the Edo period remains mainly along the river.

In recent years, like Kawagoe City in Saitama Prefecture, it has been dubbed ‘Little Edo,’ and has become increasingly popular as a tourist destination. On the day we visited, there were many students there, probably on a school trip. Tourists who noticed the filming were delighted.” (Local resident observing the filming)

The drama is based on a manga about a young newlywed couple set in a retro Showa era, and has been a hot topic among both older and younger generations even before it aired, with the first episode being viewed a total of 3.9 million times (calculated from the combined values of Tver and FOD up until May 21st. Streamed on “WEB The Television” on May 22nd). Episodes 1 to 4 have been viewed a total of over 13 million times, an astounding figure.

“The pure love between Natsumi and Takimasa is heartwarming, and viewers are drawn in by their cuteness. The relationship between Fumiko and Ryunosuke has also become a hot topic on social media, with people saying things like, ‘There’s something suspicious about the two of them,’ and ‘I’m curious about the distance between them.’” (TV magazine writer)

“Natsumi says she has a feeling that a couple’s rendezvous is about to happen!?”

The comment was added. We can’t take our eyes off future developments.
