Nursery Teacher’s Abuse of Boys Exposed

“I’ve always had a sexual interest in underage men.”

The misdeeds of a former nursery school teacher who sexually assaulted several boys at the nursery school where she worked are being revealed one after another during the trial.

On October 9, 2012, former nursery school teacher Kota Yamashiro (32) was arrested by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department’s Mukojima Police Station on suspicion of non-consensual intercourse for sexually assaulting a boy named A at the nursery school in Sumida Ward where he worked. He reportedly made the above statement during police questioning at the time.

“Defendant Yamashiro committed the crime during nap time in mid-August, and the incident came to light when A-kun’s father consulted the police in late August. Another boy, B-kun, was also victimized on the same day, and Mukojima Police Station rearrested him on October 30th on suspicion of sexual intercourse without consent. Furthermore, an investigation of security camera footage revealed that he had also committed a crime against B-kun in early August, and he was arrested a third time on December 5th on suspicion of sexual intercourse without consent. Defendant Yamashiro voluntarily resigned from the nursery where he worked in mid-September.” (National newspaper social affairs reporter)

Yamashiro’s trial has been underway at the Tokyo District Court since February 21, 2013. The details of Yamashiro’s despicable crimes, revealed in the indictment read out by the prosecutor, were shocking. 

“The defendant had worked as a nursery school teacher at the nursery school where the crime occurred since 2019, but had been committing lewd acts, such as touching the genitals of boys attending the school, even prior to this incident.

In mid-August 2012, the defendant set up something like a makeshift tent in the nursery room on the third floor, consisting of a plastic swimming pool placed on top of a cardboard enclosure, and placed the genitals of A and B into his own mouth. In early August, he also set up a cardboard enclosure in the library corner on the third floor of the nursery and placed B’s genitals into his own mouth.

The crimes in this case came to light one after another when A’s guardian heard A say to the effect that the defendant licked my genitals and contacted the police for a victimization report.”

According to prosecutors, security cameras installed in the park captured images and audio of Yamashiro sexually assaulting the victims.

“In the incident that took place in mid-August, a child’s voice could be heard from inside what appeared to be a makeshift tent asking, ‘Hey, teacher, are you doing it?’ and there is audio of the defendant responding. In the incident that took place in early August, the defendant and B were recorded pulling down their trousers inside a cardboard enclosure, as well as the defendant saying, ‘I’m going to lick you.'”

The prosecutor further revealed that both the parents of A and B expressed strong desire for punishment, stating, “If possible, we would like the maximum possible sentence.”

Details of the crime against the third boy also revealed

At the second hearing held on April 15, another crime against boy C was revealed. In this case, Yamashiro was indicted on a charge of non-consensual indecent assault.

“In late July 2012, the defendant touched C’s genitals with his fingers over his clothes in the nursery room on the third floor of the nursery where he was working. The police became aware of this incident while closely examining the security camera footage from the nursery during the investigation into the cases involving A and B. In addition, C’s guardian had heard from C that the defendant had touched my genitals.”

Although Yamashiro has admitted to the crimes against A and B, he denies the crime against C, saying, “I claim that I didn’t do it.”

It is said that Yamashiro is expected to face multiple additional charges in the future. It will likely be some time before the full extent of the sexual abuse committed by nursery school staff at the nursery school becomes clear.
