Matsumoto Wakana Reflects on a Fulfilling Year and Takes on Role of Skilled Emergency Doctor in Spring Drama

“I honestly don’t feel like I’ve truly ‘broken out,’ but last year was a fulfilling one,”
Says actress Wakana Matsumoto (41) with a look full of satisfaction. Her remarkable performance in the 2022 drama “Yangonotaki Ichizoku” (Fuji TV) sparked widespread attention, creating the term “Matsumoto Theater” as her popularity skyrocketed, propelling her into stardom.
Now, she stars in the upcoming drama “Dr. Ashura” (Fuji TV), which will air in April. She plays the role of a super-skilled emergency doctor, Akino Ashura, who never refuses any emergency patient and will do whatever it takes to save them.
“This time, the drama is set in the emergency department, where we deal with life and death on the front lines. I studied under a medical supervisor to ensure I portrayed the role as authentically as possible. For instance, even something as simple as chest compressions can be spotted by real doctors if done incorrectly, so I focused on learning the proper techniques, visiting real emergency scenes, and trying to bring that tension to the screen.”
Matsumoto’s dedication to her role goes beyond what is seen on screen.
“There are surgery scenes where my hands are shown, and I became conscious that even the slightest bit of nail growth would be noticeable. Though the surgery scenes are filmed with sterilized gloves, I still felt it was important to look doctor-like, so I made sure to keep my nails short. After playing this role, I’ve actually started feeling uncomfortable with my own nails being too long in real life (laughs).”
This is Matsumoto’s third time starring in a prime-time drama. Reflecting on her experience, she shared how she has developed a sense of responsibility as the lead actress.
“I’ve been fortunate to be surrounded by great people, and I hope I can repay some of that kindness on set. I’ve met many respected leads, and I want to carry on what they’ve taught me.”
In the April 25th issue of FRIDAY (May 9, 16, 23 combined issue) and the paid edition FRIDAY GOLD, Matsumoto candidly discusses the moments when she considered quitting acting and what kept her going.
