Even though they looked as gorgeous as cherry blossoms at night, women who were sold to Yoshiwara were often contracted to work in Yoshiwara for ten years, known as “ten years in the bitter world. While some women were happy if they were “promised” by their favorite customers before the end of the ten-year period, many tragedies occurred in which women lost their lives before the end of the ten-year period.
