An actress with a global presence

On February 7 (local time), the Critics Choice Awards (CCA) was held in California, USA. Considered a precursor to the Academy Awards, this prestigious event saw actress Moeka Hoshi (29) win the award for Best Supporting Actress.

“This year marked the 30th edition of the CCA, which is one of the major awards alongside the Emmys and Golden Globes. The drama SHOGUN in which Hoshi appeared made history by receiving nominations in a record 18 categories at the Emmys and winning four awards at the Golden Globes.

Additionally, Hiroyuki Sanada (64) and Tadanobu Asano (51) gained attention for winning Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, respectively. At the CCA, Hoshi triumphed over Hollywood heavyweights like Nicole Kidman (57) to claim the Best Supporting Actress award,” said a reporter from a sports newspaper’s entertainment section.

Hoshi first gained recognition in 2016 when she won the Grand Prix in Miss iD 2016 and made her drama debut the following year in 100 Million Yen Women (TV Tokyo). This January, she appeared in dramas such as TRUE COLORS (NHK) and Bansan Blues (TV Tokyo). In SHOGUN, she gave a captivating performance as the wife of the English navigator John Blackthorne (Miura Anjin), solidifying her name both domestically and internationally.

FRIDAY Digital spotted Hoshi, who is making waves worldwide, in mid-January.

She also has an outstanding sense of fashion

On an unseasonably warm afternoon, Hoshi appeared at a convenience store in Akasaka, Tokyo, wearing a white duffle jacket and with headphones draped around her neck. She was seen chatting with a woman who appeared to be a work associate while purchasing a bottled drink before heading into the neighboring building.

“The jacket Hoshi is wearing is from the brand ‘HYKE,’ a series inspired by 1950s naval uniforms. It’s an incredibly popular item that sells out immediately upon release, priced at around 90,000 yen—a rather high-end piece.

Hoshi’s fashion choices have also drawn attention at the CCA Awards, where she wore a striking crimson Louis Vuitton dress. The daring bandeau top paired with a flowing cape made a strong impression, earning her a spot among the event’s best-dressed selections by multiple media outlets. Her impeccable fashion sense shines both on and off the red carpet,” says a fashion magazine writer.

In a previous interview with FRIDAY, Hoshi stated, “Japan is my primary stage as an actress,” but also added, “I want to create great work wherever I’m needed—whether that’s in Japan or America.” It seems she will continue making remarkable films on a global scale.
