A scammer pretending to be a police officer suddenly called a reporter’s wife and said, “This is the Toyama Prefectural Police.

It is important not to follow the caller's pace by saying, "Please give me your phone number so I can call you back.

The phone call was abrupt and snappy.

Let’s return to the exchange between the reporter’s wife and the fake police officer at the beginning of this article.

Wife: “If it is difficult to put it in writing, I will record it because it is important. Please start from the beginning again.”

Fake police officer: “Recorded, huh? Uh, let’s see… …… (slurred)”

Wife: “Again, please tell me your name.”

The call was then abruptly cut off.

At first I was very intimidated by the way he said, ‘You must turn yourself in immediately. However, I also got the impression that the caller was very taciturn, as if a part-time worker was reading from a memo. When we asked a lot of questions, the atmosphere of impatience was palpable. The phone number is a number I have never seen before, perhaps from overseas. I felt that if the police suddenly called me and said, ‘We suspect you are involved in a crime,’ it would not be surprising if people, especially elderly people, panicked,” said the reporter’s wife.

Again, there is no way that a police officer would suddenly call and ask for money. Do not try to respond to suspicious calls alone, and do not even try to comply with the request. It is important to hang up and consult with family members and others around you, and in some cases, actually report the situation to the police.
