Suspect Shimada being taken into custody by the police. One of his sneakers was stained bright red, and his own hands were also covered in blood, seemingly cut with scissors.

At around 11:00 AM on January 28, a 110 emergency call was made near the west exit of Hankyu Juso Station, reporting that multiple people had been injured in a stabbing incident. When police officers arrived at the scene, the suspect, who had been brandishing a knife, had already been subdued by bystanders.

What exactly happened?

The suspect, identified as Toshitake (Ribu) Shimada, 22, of unknown occupation, residing in Yodogawa Ward, Osaka City, was arrested on the spot for attempted murder. Shimada allegedly stabbed an acquaintance in the head with a pair of scissors approximately 7.5 cm in blade length, attempting to kill him.

Fortunately, the victim only sustained bruises, but another acquaintance who intervened suffered a cut on his finger. Shimada himself also appeared to have cut his own fingers, bleeding heavily, with his hands and shoes stained with blood.

By chance, the author was present at the scene and captured footage of Shimada being taken into custody. During his arrest, Shimada hurled profanities at the police officers the entire time.

“Hurry up and put me in the patrol car! I’m in pain here!”

“You guys are seriously useless! At this rate, you’ll be stuck as beat cops at the station for life!”

He remained highly agitated throughout.

Since Shimada was covered in blood, the officers wore gloves for infection prevention and used blankets and plastic covers inside the patrol car to avoid contaminating the seats as much as possible. Seeing this, Shimada became even more furious and suddenly kicked off his blood-soaked right sneaker.

“I don’t need these shoes anymore!” he shouted. But when it came time to get into the patrol car, he suddenly changed his tune:

“Hurry up and put my shoes back on! My feet hurt! Let me ride in an ambulance instead of this!”—his words displaying utter selfishness.

As he was getting into the car, he touched an uncovered headrest with his bloody hands, prompting an officer to yell, “Don’t touch that!! Move further in—someone else is getting in!”

Shimada kept demanding an ambulance, to which an officer responded, “We’ll call one when we get to the station, so hang in there.” With that, Shimada was transported to the Yodogawa Police Station.

The shopping street was filled with an atmosphere of commotion

Hankyu Juso Station, the scene of the incident, is located near Umeda Station and is a bustling area with heavy foot traffic both day and night. The area is lined with many bars and restaurants. In front of Juso Station, there is a shopping street, which is also home to “Kihachi Souhonpo,” a famous shop known for its Osaka specialty, Mitarashi Dango.

At the time of the incident, the area was crowded with people, but as three ambulances and five police cars gathered at the entrance of the shopping street, the atmosphere quickly turned chaotic.

A store employee described the moment the incident occurred:

“Around 11 o’clock, I suddenly heard loud shouting, and when I looked, there was blood everywhere—it was shocking. The suspect was subdued right after, but I had no idea what had just happened. The police were taking different men away separately to question them.”

Another witness expressed their unease:

“When I heard the commotion, I thought it might be a random attack. Things have been getting dangerous lately, so it wouldn’t be surprising no matter where it happens.”

Even after Shimada was taken away, the west exit of Juso Station remained cordoned off for the time being. Passengers exiting the station had to take detours, navigating through a small staircase to reach the shopping street. Some wheelchair users were unable to pass and were left stranded, adding to the confusion at the scene.

Furthermore, station staff, along with employees from nearby stores, were seen cleaning the bloodstains using buckets and mops. Shimada’s reckless actions had caused immense trouble for many people.

As he was being put into the patrol car, he repeatedly demanded to be taken in an ambulance instead and refused to get inside for some time.
The west exit of Hankyu Juso Station was cordoned off, forcing passengers to go around the station.
The police officer who attended the incident was holding a sashimata in his hand. It was a blessing in disguise that the problem was resolved quickly.
Ambulances and other vehicles were parked at the entrance to the shopping street in front of Juso Station, creating a tense atmosphere.
