<h2>In her own flamboyant fashion</h2>
In early January, right at the start of the new year, Kuniko Yamada (64) was spotted walking through the streets of Roppongi (Minato Ward, Tokyo) dressed in a flashy outfit, accompanied by a large group of staff.
Wearing a matching set printed with numerous photos and illustrations, topped with a coat seemingly made by patching together various animal furs, her presence stood out even in Roppongi.
&#8220;Yamada served as a judge for the &#8216;M-1 Grand Prix&#8217; for two consecutive years in 2022 and 2023, but she was not selected for last year’s competition. On December 18, 2024, she updated her YouTube channel with a video titled &#8216;I Was Dropped,&#8217; where she shared her thoughts: &#8216;I’ve done it for two years. I love it and it’s fun, but I’m already an old lady. Maybe it&#8217;s time for a younger person to take over.'&#8221; (TV magazine writer)
Following this, social media was flooded with reactions—some lamenting her absence as a judge, saying, 
&#8220;I wish someone from Yamada&#8217;s generation had remained on the panel,&#8221; or &#8220;Her judging was debatable, but her comments were outstanding.&#8221; Others expressed a desire to see more of Yamada as a comedian, stating, &#8220;Fans really want to see her perform,&#8221; and &#8220;Her vocal energy and quick reflexes prove she’s still in top form.&#8221;
While it’s unclear if she was directly responding to these voices, in an article published by &#8220;Josei Jishin&#8221; on January 19, Yamada revealed her enthusiasm for participating in M-1 herself, stating:
&#8220;If I can do it, I want to!&#8221;
She even named IKKO (63) as a potential partner and extended an invitation, though she admitted IKKO had yet to agree.
&#8220;Yamada was diagnosed with breast cancer in her 40s in 2007, undergoing two surgeries before achieving remission. She continues to be involved in various awareness activities. With that experience, her approach to work remains unchanged—giving her all while she’s alive. She frequently says, &#8216;My profession is comedy. Sure, I do all sorts of work, but this is my main job. I don’t want to quit.&#8217; Far from being an &#8216;old lady,&#8217; her passion for comedy rivals that of young comedians.&#8221; (Acquaintance of Yamada)
Returning to the scene at the beginning of the story—apparently, she was filming a street-walking segment that day, and her flashy outfit was actually handmade by Yamada herself, piecing together leopard, snake, and cow-patterned fabrics.
