Born in Aichi Prefecture in 1987. As a junior, she became the first female athlete to successfully perform a quadruple Salchow in an official competition. After turning professional, she competed in two Olympic Games and won two World Championships before retiring in December 2013. After retirement, she continued her career as a professional figure skater and coach.
