The content of the restructuring of news every

“news every”., the news program aired weekdays in the evening on Nippon TV, will see its longtime anchor, Takahiko Fujii (53), step down at the end of March 2024. Although the program introduced younger hosts, the viewer ratings did not improve, and rumors suggest that the network may soon implement a restructuring.

“There are rumors within the news department that Nana Suzuki (44) might be appointed as the sole main anchor. This could potentially happen around the April 2024 programming reshuffle,” said a source from Nippon TV.

Suzue Nana is currently co-hosting the program as the main MC alongside her colleague, Keisuke Mori (46). However, a TV magazine writer mentions, “Mori doesn’t seem to quite fit the evening news format.”

A TV magazine writer explained, “Fujii had a calm, corporate-anchor appearance that resonated with the main audience of middle-aged women. His serious and engaging comments were a great match. On the other hand, Mori, who has been a part of Sukkiri since 2006 and was the sub-host until the show ended in 2021, was loved for his lively style and youthful appearance, which worked well for the morning show. However, his tone is a bit too light for the evening news, and he seems to struggle to connect with viewers as Fujii did.”

As mentioned earlier, “news every”. underwent a model change in March 2024, welcoming Yuki Saito (36) and Mirei Kiritani (35) as sub-anchors to attract younger viewers. Additionally, they removed Kimiko Jinno (60), who had been the main anchor since 2010, in September 2024.

Kazuo Tokumitsu, another new anchor, also praised the program, saying, “It’s the most wonderful. Most Wonderful,” praised by Kazuo Tokumitsu, an announcer.

“When Mr. Jin was there, Announcer Suzuki played the big sister role to the two rookie hosts, Saito and Kiritani, while Mr. Jin was like a mother, providing stability. However, after Mr. Jin left, the atmosphere changed drastically. The cooking segment with Announcer Mori and Kiritani was criticized on social media, with comments like ‘It feels like a morning information program, and I don’t want to watch it,’ and it hasn’t been going very well,” said a writer.

In response to this situation, Announcer Suzuki has expressed considerable concern.

A graduate of Keio University’s Faculty of Economics and a former Miss Keio, Suzuki was part of the group ‘Go! Go! Girls’ with Elena Hayama and Miku Natsume in 2007. After becoming an idol announcer, she married in 2008, took maternity leave in 2013, and returned to work in early 2014. She became the main host of “news every.” following its renewal in January 2014 and has been focusing on news since then.

“Her announcing skills are exceptional, and with her calm demeanor, she has been praised as ‘the most outstanding among the junior announcers’ by Kazuo Tokumitsu, a former NTV announcer (83). Both Announcer Fujii, with whom she worked on ‘news every.’ and Mr. Jin, who graduated in September, also highly valued her. Announcer Suzuki is currently an Executive Announcer and also mentors younger colleagues,” said a source from NTV.

As for NTV’s female announcers, in the past, there were veteran news announcers like Makiko Ishikawa (75), Yumi Iida (67), and Junko Toyoda (58), who set examples by providing proper guidance to junior announcers.

Going too far in fighting alone

“TBS’s Yoshikawa Miyoko (70) still conducts training for newcomers even after retiring. Thanks to her, TBS has cultivated female announcers with strong announcing skills. At NTV, there is also Executive Announcer Mizuno Asami (37), but she comes from a variety background. There is growing expectation for Suzuki to become the post-Toyoda figure” (same source).

On the other hand, there are also voices saying.

“Isn’t she being overburdened? Suzuki herself seems to be trying too hard to meet expectations. Within the network, there are many voices expressing concern, saying ‘Suzuki’s lone struggle is too much'” (NTV news production insider).

Suzuki herself spoke about this on NTV’s recruitment page:

“Revolutionary things that change our lives, the birth of leaders who will open new eras, the emergence of unprecedented records, various births are waiting ahead. If we view things only as points, we might miss the moment of birth. I want to see and share as many of those moments as possible by broadening our perspective and viewing them in terms of lines, planes, and three dimensions.”

Carrying the expectations to become the post-Toyoda announcer, Suzuki’s lone struggle continues.
