The reason Doc is in a wheelchair.

In the early afternoon of early December, Hollywood actor Christopher Lloyd (86) was seen moving in a wheelchair at the arrival lobby of Haneda Airport.

From December 6th for three days, the “Tokyo Comic Convention 2024” (Tokyo Comicon) was held at Makuhari Messe (in Mihama, Chiba City), a celebration of comic books, movies, and pop culture. Lloyd had come to Japan as a guest for the event.

“Lloyd became a worldwide famous actor for his role as the scientist ‘Doc’ in the 1985 film Back to the Future, and appeared in all three films of the series. He later hit big with roles such as Gomez Addams in The Addams Family series, and solidified his status as a comedy actor. This year marks his fourth consecutive appearance at the event, which started in 2016,” said a film magazine editor.

At 86 years old, Lloyd’s age naturally led to the assumption that he might be living in a wheelchair, but this wasn’t actually the case.

“His legs and back are still in good condition. On this occasion, the airline staff, considering his age, arranged for a wheelchair. I think he just happily accepted the offer to use it,” the editor explained.

While in the wheelchair, Lloyd was seen holding a bottle of O-i Ocha (a Japanese green tea brand) on his lap and seemingly talking on the phone. At the Comicon venue, however, he was reported to have walked around just fine.
