Etsuo Nakamura, an emeritus professor at the University of Tsukuba, who is an expert on Russian politics, explains:
&#8220;One of the Russian oligarchs also advocating for an early end to the war is Oleg Deripaska (56), a new wealthy elite from Russia. He wants an early resolution to gain immense profits from reconstruction business. He seems to be aiming to get involved in a reconstruction project worth around 70 trillion yen, which would take place if Russia were to control the four eastern Ukrainian regions.&#8221;
FRIDAY discovered the mansion of the billionaire Deripaska, who seeks to amass a vast fortune.
The grand estate is located along the coastline in Ito City, Shizuoka Prefecture. The area is surrounded by iron gates and a long hedge, with the rear of the property facing a steep cliff on the eastern coast of the Izu Peninsula. The interior remains unseen. According to the property registry, the mansion consists of one basement level and two floors above ground, with a plot size of approximately 5,500 square meters and a total floor area of about 420 square meters.
&#8220;There is no interaction with the neighbors or any greetings. He seems to visit a few times a year, and recently, the lights in the house were on,&#8221; said a nearby resident.
The official owner of the villa is a company based in the Seychelles, an island nation in East Africa. The same entity also owns two elegant buildings in the prime area of Shibuya, Tokyo. What kind of person is Deripaska, the true owner?
&#8220;After the collapse of the Soviet Union, he made his fortune by establishing an aluminum company, earning the nickname &#8216;Aluminum King.&#8217; He is a big fan of Japan and is said to travel between Tokyo and Ito when he visits. He sometimes invites world leaders to his villa or the Shibuya buildings to discuss business matters,&#8221; said a journalist from a national newspaper.

<h2>Oligarchs Financially Support Putin&#8217;s Regime</h2>
Oligarchs are wealthy individuals who pledge loyalty to President Putin in exchange for protection of their businesses. According to Forbes magazine, Oleg Deripaska&#8217;s net worth reaches $2.8 billion (approximately 430 billion yen), and he has even ranked among the top ten in the world’s richest people list (9th place in 2008).
Etsuo Nakamura, as previously mentioned, explains:
&#8220;Deripaska is close to Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and has visited Japan with him. He maintains his position by supporting President Putin, stating that &#8216;Russians desire strong leadership.'&#8221;
The oligarchs economically support Putin&#8217;s regime. Deripaska, in particular, is subject to economic sanctions from Western countries but has not been included in Japan&#8217;s asset-freezing list. This suggests that the real estate he owns in Ito and Shibuya might serve as a business hub.
&#8220;High-quality Russian timber is not on Japan&#8217;s embargo list. Deripaska might not be targeted by economic sanctions because he is involved in the timber trade. It is said that significant funds are flowing from the oligarchs to President Putin,&#8221; Nakamura says.
&#8220;Some of this could even be used in the Ukraine war. While there are no direct flights between Japan and Russia, it is easier for individuals traveling by sea to pass through immigration and conduct business freely in Japan. Oligarchs are likely seeking business opportunities here.&#8221;
It appears that within this secluded villa, a Russian billionaire is working in the shadows.
