The premature farewell of Miho Nakayama (1987).

Singer and actress Miho Nakayama passed away suddenly on December 6th at the age of 54.

On that day, she was scheduled to perform at the “Miho Nakayama Christmas Concert 2024 in Billboard Live” in Osaka. Around 9 a.m., she was supposed to meet with her staff at Shinagawa Station, but Nakayama never showed up.

Suspicious, the staff visited her home and found her sitting in the bathtub with her face submerged in water. She was later confirmed dead by arriving medical personnel.

An autopsy was conducted on the 8th, and authorities confirmed there was no foul play.

“The cause of death was determined to be an accidental incident that occurred during bathing,” (official website) was reported.

Sleeping one to two hours is common

The sudden and unexpected news of Miho Nakayama’s passing shocked many. Just five days before her death, on the 1st, at a concert, she had reaffirmed her determination to continue singing for the rest of her life, telling the audience:

“I want to sing for the rest of my life.”

Nakayama made her debut in 1985 with the TV drama Maido Osawagase Shimasu (TBS), and was affectionately known as “Miporin.” She achieved massive success with hits like Sekai Ju no Dare Yori Kitto in 1992 and the 1994 ballad Tada Nakitakunaru no, both of which went on to sell millions of copies.

“At that time, there was not as much legal regulation as now, so the schedule for rising stars was grueling. Sometimes, they only had one or two hours of sleep. Despite this, she never got seriously ill and worked tirelessly. Among her peers, I think she was the most resilient,” said a music industry insider.

Nakayama loved drinking and was often seen socializing at bars.

While she occasionally went to high-end places typical of celebrities, there were also frequent sightings of her at bars and eateries around her home. Everyone who encountered her described her as, in a good way, just an ordinary person.

Even in public places, not in private rooms, she was unbothered. If someone recognized her and shouted, “Miporin!” she would smile and chat cheerfully. There were also reports of her boldly singing her hits at karaoke, fully embracing the moment.

“She was truly an unpretentious person. When she had a few drinks, she’d get chatty in a good way, and sometimes she’d even start speaking like an old man, saying things like ‘Daakara~’ as she drank. She was loved by everyone,” said a source from the entertainment industry.

This aspect of her personality is similar to that of fellow idol Kyoko Koizumi, who is of the same generation. According to the previously mentioned music industry insider:

“Today’s idols keep their work and personal lives separate, but idols from a previous era had a much stronger connection with their fans. The fervor of their fans was immense, and there was a sense of unity. They were deeply ingrained with the idea that ‘I exist because of my fans.’”

What is truly unfortunate is that, at the time of the accident, no one noticed any “signs” or abnormalities in Nakayama’s condition.

Next year would have been the 40th anniversary of his debut.

Nakayama Miho divorced Tsujii Hidenari in 2014. After that, she was in a relationship with musician Keichiro Shibuya, but that too didn’t last long.

“Miho has always had the image of being a woman of many loves, but in recent years, she lived alone with her cat at home. It’s really unfortunate to think that if she had someone living with her, maybe things would have been different,” said a tabloid TV insider.

According to police reports, her cause of death is listed as drowning. The exact circumstances leading to this remain unclear, but there is speculation that a condition known as heat shock might have contributed, as sudden temperature changes can cause significant fluctuations in blood pressure, leading to health issues. It’s also possible that she had consumed alcohol before taking the bath.

“What is known is that there was a sudden change in her physical condition while in the bath. She had no one to call for help, and I’m sure she must have been terrified,” said the same TV insider.

She was supposed to celebrate her 40th debut anniversary in 2025. She had been excited about it and had been thinking about tours and new albums.

“The thing she was most focused on was her fans. She was in talks to create opportunities for direct interaction with them,” shared a sports newspaper reporter.

Perhaps the person who feels the most regret is Miho herself. Rest in peace.
