The defendant, Mogami, became enraged after being banned from the Filipino pub.

“I found a small pleasure in talking to my favorite woman at the bar.”

In the opening statement, the defendant’s lawyer explained the defendant’s state of mind.

On November 18, the first trial of Morito Mogami (65), who is charged with attempted murder and assault, was held at the Tokyo District Court. The defendant admitted to most of the charges, stating, “It’s mostly correct.”

“The incident occurred in July 2023. As a regular customer, the defendant repeatedly had disputes with the female manager of a Filipino pub he frequented. He had a favorite woman there, but he became dissatisfied with her behavior and had a falling out with the manager, resulting in a ban from the establishment. In retaliation, the defendant is believed to have attempted to kill the manager, stabbing her multiple times with a knife on a street in Tokyo.” (National newspaper judicial reporter)

“FRIDAY Digital” reported in a July 10, 2023 article about the attempted murder committed by Mogami. I want to revisit the shocking image of him bowing deeply to our magazine’s cameramen during his detention, in connection to the defendant’s grudge and the arrest.

A man is chasing a woman.

“‘Help, help!’”

A woman rushed into a convenience store late at night, crying for help. She was covered in blood with multiple injuries all over her body, her expression one of sheer fear.

On the night of July 6, 2023, around 11 p.m., the incident occurred in a busy area of Nerima, Tokyo. A man in a black suit, holding a knife, was chasing a woman in her 40s, Ms. A. The man stabbed Ms. A repeatedly in her chest and abdomen.

“The scene was about 150 meters away from Nerima Station on the Seibu Ikebukuro Line, in a district with many drinking establishments. A witness to the altercation called 110 (police emergency) saying, ‘A man with a knife is chasing a woman. The woman is covered in blood.’ The man chased Ms. A into the convenience store, but quickly fled.

From security camera footage and other evidence, the assailant was identified as the unemployed defendant, Morito Mogami, who lived in a nearby apartment. The Tokyo Metropolitan Police’s Nerima Station arrested Mogami at around 4 a.m. on the following day, July 7, when he returned to his home. He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and admitted, ‘There is no doubt that I did it’” (according to a reporter from a national newspaper’s social affairs department).

Ms. A, who was rushed to the hospital, sustained serious injuries but thankfully her life was not in danger. Ms. A is of Filipino nationality. What kind of trouble did she have with Mogami?

“I thought I was being mocked.”

“A-san is the manager of a Filipino bar in Nerima. The accused, Mosta Mamoru, began frequenting the establishment around 2020 and became a regular customer. He had feelings for one of the female employees, B-san. However, when he saw B-san kissing another customer on the cheek, he became enraged. This led to frequent arguments with A-san, who was the manager of the establishment.

Feeling resentful, Mosta contacted the police multiple times to criticize the store and the employees, saying things like ‘I can’t forgive them.’ Just before the incident, he called the police again saying, ‘I’m going to kill that woman.’ The police responded by instructing the store on security measures, and Mosta was banned from the establishment.”

On the day of the incident, Mosta was seen in front of the store. He had prepared a knife in advance and appeared to have been waiting for A-san to leave the store, making it a planned attack.

Mosta also stated, “‘I got angry when I was banned from the store. I thought I was being mocked and that’s why I stabbed her.’ It seems he had been harboring resentment due to the store’s treatment of him.”

After his arrest, Mosta was seen lowering his head deeply in front of reporters gathered during his transfer, showing a shocking gesture. The verdict is scheduled to be delivered on December 11.

During his transfer, Mosta deeply bowed to the reporters (the photo has been partially edited).
