Kobayashi’s Future Uncertain as Kawai Joins Giants
Sugano Tomoyuki’s potential move to Major League Baseball, Takumi Ohshima’s decision not to exercise his free-agent rights and stay, and the possible acquisition of Takuya Kai from SoftBank could have significant implications for the Giants.
One player who may be facing a potential exit is catcher Seiji Kobayashi (35).
Why is this the case?
“Kobayashi had great chemistry with Sugano and was his primary catcher. He caught all 24 of Sugano’s starts this season, which accounts for nearly 60% of his 42 games played. If Sugano moves to MLB, Kobayashi’s opportunities will obviously decrease significantly.
If Ohshima stays and SoftBank’s Kai, who declared free agency, is acquired, Kobayashi’s role becomes even more uncertain. At the Giants, Kobayashi has been the third catcher behind Ohshima and Yuki Kishida. If Kai joins, his position will be even more at risk,” said a team official.
With all your might, stay true to yourself.
Kobayashi will turn 36 next season, and with the team’s efforts to bring in younger players, his chances of continuing his career are uncertain. He likely understands the tough situation he’s in. In an interview with “Sports Hochi” on November 12, he commented on Kanno’s move to the MLB:
“I have no choice but to keep struggling and doing my best. I will push through and stay true to myself.”
However, Kobayashi’s future is still considered bright due to certain circumstances.
“Manager Shinjiro Abe feels that Kobayashi’s batting is lacking but highly values his leadership in calling the game. Kobayashi is known for encouraging the team with his loud voice from the bench and actively mentoring young catchers. While his playing time might decrease next season, there are strong voices within the organization wanting him to remain as a coach after retirement. His future looks bright.
If they acquire Kai through free agency, it’s reported that Kobayashi may not be protected and could be traded to SoftBank. A move to the Hawks might provide more playing opportunities, which would be beneficial for him. However, considering his aspirations to become a coach, staying with the Giants, even if it means spending more time on the bench, would likely offer greater long-term benefits.” (Sports reporter)
Although Kobayashi’s playing career faces uncertainty, his second life as a coach seems to be full of promise.
