When the Tokyo Metropolitan Government was actively campaigning to bring the 2020 Olympics to Tokyo, it launched the “Junior Athlete Discovery and Development Project. The project was an attempt to gather junior high school students with excellent athletic skills and provide them with gifted education, limiting them to sports in which they could start in high school and still aim for the top in the world.

After several rounds of sports tests, Reiya passed with flying colors. He was one of only 13 boys in the first cohort of the school, which was made up of athletes from all over Tokyo who were proud of their athletic abilities.

During his third year of junior high school, he experienced rowing, boxing, wrestling, weightlifting, canoeing, archery, and biking under the project’s program. Perhaps influenced by my father’s hobby of off-road biking, I became interested in bicycles and decided to continue in high school.

However, there are only a few high schools in Tokyo that have a cycling club. He practiced on a cycling road along the Tama River near his home, and then set his sights on a metropolitan high school that was just the right distance for him to practice, 20 km each way from his home.

Before the entrance examination, I asked the high school to start a cycling club, and they said that they could start a club for me alone, overturning the previous rule that a club with less than five members was a club. This was thanks to my title as a Tokyo Metropolitan Authorized Junior Athlete. However, the condition was that I had to pass the entrance examination as usual. I studied hard because it was a reasonably advanced school,” he said.
