Despite the red light, the van did not slow down and entered the intersection. After entering the intersection, it collided with another car and mounted the sidewalk, severely damaged.
On October 21, the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department’s Tanashi Station re-arrested Yusuke Miyake, a 44-year-old self-employed man from Nishitokyo City, on suspicion of violating the Road Traffic Act (dangerous driving causing injury) and hit-and-run. He is accused of running a red light and causing a collision at an intersection in Tokorozawa City.
This is the second time Miyake has been arrested. Prior to this accident, he had been arrested and indicted for violating the Stimulants Control Law.
&#8220;The accident occurred on the night of September 20, just after 9 p.m., on a one-lane road in each direction. Miyake’s gray van ignored the red light and entered the intersection. After colliding with another car, it crashed into a shrubbery by the sidewalk. Miyake then fled the scene, leaving the severely damaged van behind. The 60-year-old man driving the car that was struck sustained injuries requiring about one month to heal,&#8221; (national newspaper social section reporter).

<h2>Repeatedly making incoherent statements</h2>
Miyake, likely realizing he couldn’t escape, turned himself in to the Tanashi Station on September 21, the day after the accident. It was there that a shocking revelation came to light.
&#8220;Miyake repeatedly made incomprehensible and incoherent statements. Suspicious, the investigators conducted a drug test. The test showed a positive result for methamphetamine in his urine, leading to his immediate arrest. Miyake reportedly confessed, saying that he had used meth before driving. It seems he was driving the van while under the influence of illegal drugs and was unable to make sound judgments,&#8221; (same source).
A photographer from this magazine captured Miyake’s appearance immediately after his arrest. During his transfer on October 22, he was seen with short, graying hair, looking uneasy and glancing around as if on alert, showing a shocking, unguarded side.
The police are investigating the details of the accident, including the route by which Miyake obtained the methamphetamine.
