Suspect Chika denies the allegations.

“A flying rock damaged my luxury car.”

“A bolt flew out and hit me.”

The trio, consisting of two men and one woman, used this pretext to take a photo of a truck driver’s driver’s license. They allegedly used the image to fraudulently create credit cards and commit forgery.

As of September 4, the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department’s Criminal Profits Prevention Division arrested three suspects on charges of fraud, among other offenses: Takaaki Saito (32), occupation unknown, living in Koto Ward, Tokyo; his wife Chika (33); and their acquaintance, Yuki Nomura (30), a temporary worker from Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture. Saito has remained silent during the investigation, Chika has denied any involvement, saying, “I have no recollection of this at all,” and Nomura has admitted to the crime, stating, “There is no mistake.”

“The incident related to the arrest occurred on July 10 of last year. Using a credit card in someone else’s name, they purchased two smartphones (worth about 300,000 yen) at an electronics store in Osaka Prefecture. They also bought clothes at a clothing store in Tokyo, returned them, and received a refund of about 100,000 yen in cash. The incident came to light after the credit card company reported ‘suspicion of unauthorized use’ to the police,” said a reporter from a national newspaper’s social affairs section.

Giving a brazen look.

The trio’s criminal method is both malicious and meticulous.

“First, they would rent high-end cars like Ferraris and Lamborghinis and then scout for trucks on the highway. When they targeted a truck, they would approach the driver when the truck stopped at a rest area and make accusations such as, ‘The luxury car was damaged by a flying stone’ or ‘The cargo hit us.’

To further convince the driver, they would report the incident as a property damage accident to the police and call them to the scene. After the police officers encouraged the parties to discuss the matter and left, the trio would suggest exchanging contact information and use the opportunity to photograph the driver’s license. It is alleged that they used these images to create fraudulent credit cards in the driver’s name online,” said the same source.

The trio, fearing the discovery of their crimes, deliberately spaced out the time between photographing the driver’s license and creating the fraudulent credit cards by several months. They also meticulously arranged for the delivery addresses to be apartments or condominiums rented in the driver’s name.

“The locations where the perpetrators targeted drivers span from the Tomei Expressway to the Joban Expressway, covering one city and ten prefectures. The police seized 34 credit cards belonging to nine people, and it is said they fraudulently used about 40 million yen. The trio not only purchased clothing and electronics but also likely used the money obtained from the fraud to cover the lease fees for luxury cars and the rent for high-rise condominiums,” said a different social affairs reporter.

Our magazine’s photographer captured the three suspects entering the police station on September 3. They displayed their chilling true faces. While Nomura, who admitted to the crime, was seen with his shoulders slumped and head bowed, Saito and Chika’s appearances were strikingly different. Saito cast a defiant gaze toward the media, and Chika even appeared to be smiling, showing her gums.

The police are advising people to be cautious and not to comply with requests to photograph identification cards or addresses unnecessarily.
