Suspect in Hit-and-Run Accident Involving Official Vehicle of Ministry of Finance

The fatal accident occurred in Nagata-cho, the heart of Japanese politics.

It was just after 5:30 in the evening of June 20. A black one-box car was speeding near the south gate of the National Diet Building in Tokyo’s Chiyoda Ward. The next moment ……. The car hit a man who was walking at a pedestrian crossing without a signal and fled. About 200 meters away, in front of the 1st House of Representatives building, the car overturned violently as it tried to avoid another passenger car that was waiting at a traffic light.

The suspect, Nobuhide Nobuhata, 55, an employee of an operating company and a resident of Chuo Ward, was arrested by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department’s Traffic Investigation Division for violating the Automobile Driving Punishment Law (negligent homicide) and the Road Traffic Law (hit-and-run). A passerby called 110 to report that a pedestrian was lying in a pedestrian crossing, and police officers rushed to the scene and found the man bleeding from the head and other parts of his body.

He was immediately transported to the hospital, but was confirmed dead about three hours later. The deceased was Yasuhiro Ohno, 67, an employee of an organization in Shinjuku Ward. There were no brake marks at the scene, and it is believed that the suspect fled without stopping after hitting Mr. Ono,” said a reporter from a national newspaper.

What is surprising is the title of the suspect. He is a “professional” transportation driver commissioned by the Ministry of Finance. At the time of the accident, he was driving an official vehicle of the Ministry of Finance. His words and actions immediately after the crime were also surprising.

The accident took place near the National Diet, so members of the press club and other media immediately rushed to the scene. According to media reports, the suspect got into trouble with police officers and others and became violent. He stuck his upper body out of the driver’s seat of the overturned car and shouted, ‘Help! What’s going on in this country? and “What’s going on in this country?

The scene was noisy with broken glass fragments, tire wheel covers, bags, etc. scattered about. According to the police, there were no signs that the suspect had been drinking. He admitted the charge and said, ‘I panicked.

When the police photographed the scene of the inspection, the suspect was staring at the photographer with a stunned expression on his face. His overconfidence that he was a “professional driver” under the purview of the Ministry of Finance may have caused a great deal of trouble.
