<p> On June 19, the Tokyo District Court handed down a sentence of life imprisonment to Aiyumi Kuboki, 37, a former nurse accused of murder and other crimes for poisoning to death three patients at the former Oguchi Hospital (Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture), where she worked. The court dismissed the appeals of both the prosecution and the defense.</p>
<p><span class="strongInContent"> The prosecution had argued that Kuboki was fully responsible and sought the death penalty. The defense, on the other hand, argued that he was not fully responsible and that the first-instance verdict was erroneous. <p><span class="strongInContent"> The number of victims is likely to be much larger. There may be many more than the three who were involved in the case. Kuboki also said that he injected disinfectant into more than 20 patients over a period of about two months. Most of the deceased patients were cremated, and no blood or other evidence was left behind. There is also no objective physical evidence, such as security cameras at the crime scene. In the end, only three cases of murder were prosecuted based on confessions.</span></p>
