<p> On March 5, the Daejeon High Court in Daejeon, South Korea, heard the case against Myung-Seok Chung, 78, president of the Japan Missionary Society for the Gospel of Jesus Christ (JMS). Chung was convicted of indecent assault against a female believer and sentenced to 23 years in prison at the first trial. However, Chung had appealed, claiming that the audio file presented by the plaintiff was a copy and could not be used as evidence.</p>
<p> FRIDAY Digital&#8221; reported in detail on the trouble that the female believer sued Chung in an article distributed on April 20, 2011. We would like to reproduce the article and look back on a major religious scandal that shook Korean society (some parts have been corrected).</p>
<h2> Some of the women sued were foreigners.</h2>

<p> A number of women in South Korea are suing a religious leader who is said to have referred to himself as the &#8220;Messiah&#8221; and &#8220;the second coming of Jesus&#8221; for sexual harassment. On April 13, 2011, the Chungnam Police in western South Korea announced that a female believer in her 30s had filed a complaint. This brings to six the number of women who have accused others of sexual abuse.</p>
<p><span class="strongInContent"> The accused is defendant Chung, president of &#8220;JMS.&#8221; The first publicized case dates back to August &#8217;01. He repeatedly sexually assaulted four female followers in their 20s at resort apartments in Malaysia and Hong Kong over a five-year period until April 2006. Chung was convicted of 10 years in prison and released in February 2006.</span></p>
<p> Korean women are not the only ones who have reported sexual assault. Foreigners have also filed complaints.</p>
<p><span class="strongInContent"> A female believer of Hong Kong nationality claims that she was indecently assaulted 17 times from February 2006 to September 2009 at the JMS facility in Geumsan County, western South Korea. An Australian female believer claims to have been sexually assaulted five times at the same facility from July 2006 to December of the same year.</span></p>

<p>The women who have become publicly known may be just the tip of the iceberg. According to Professor Kim Do-hyun of Dankook University, who has been pursuing the case against JMS, more than 10,000 women may have been sexually victimized by Chung in March 2011, according to an interview with the radio broadcaster YTN. According to Professor Kim, Chung is said to have once told him, &#8220;I have sexually victimized 10,000 women.</p>
<p><span class="strongInContent"> My ultimate goal is to make him a &#8216;heavenly lover&#8217; by providing sexual relief to 10,000 women.</span></p>
<p> On April 18, an MBC TV program revealed a shocking fact.</p>
<p><span class="strongInContent"> According to a witness who appeared on the program, while Chung was in prison, Mr. A, the number two of the cult, gathered his beautiful female followers in a room in the compound. He then took off the women&#8217;s clothes and sent the photos to defendant Chung in prison.</span></p>
<p><span class="strongInContent"> He then had the women undress and apply a special liquid to their bodies to create plaster casts. The chosen followers were called &#8220;stars,&#8221; and there were more than 1,000 of them, including foreigners. According to the program, the women received letters from defendant Chong saying, &#8220;I will love you like a blast furnace.</span></p>
<p> The allegations of sexual assault by the guru of JMS became widely known with the Netflix documentary &#8220;All for God: Faith Betrayed,&#8221; which was released in March 2011. According to the film and the prosecution&#8217;s claims in court, Chung brainwashed female believers into a state in which they were unable to resist, and then committed the crimes.</p>
<p> The truth will be revealed in court.</p>
