World-Renowned Singer Registered as Major Offender

On January 23rd, Chinese media outlets such as “China Press” reported on a business report released by the Beijing High People’s Court. One of the three “serious criminal cases” listed in the report included the name of Kris (33, Wu Yifan), a Chinese-Canadian and former member of the Korean male group “EXO.”

“Kris was found guilty of raping multiple women after intoxicating them and engaging in lewd acts. He received a 13-year prison sentence for charges of rape and group indecent assault. Chinese courts have ruled that Kris will be deported after serving his sentence. He is expected to be repatriated to his home country of Canada. In Canada, scientific methods of castration are applied to sexual offenders, and Kris is likely to undergo the same procedure.” (National newspaper Beijing correspondent)

FRIDAY Digital reported in detail on Chris’s sexual assault in an article distributed on July 23, 2021. We would like to reproduce the article and look back at the surprising modus operandi and summary of the incident (some corrections have been made).

“Including minors like myself.”

“I wanted to refuse the demand and leave, but my manager threatened me, saying, ‘You’ll be banned from the entertainment industry!’ I was threatened with expulsion from the entertainment industry. There are more than 30 women, including minors like me, who have been sexually assaulted while intoxicated.”

On July 18, 2021, a shocking accusation was posted on the Chinese version of Twitter, “Weibo”. The one who posted the statement was Ms. A, an 18-year-old aspiring to work in the entertainment industry. Ms. A claimed to have been sexually assaulted by Kris.

“At that time, Kris was also active as an actor. He was contracted with a major entertainment agency in South Korea and debuted as a member of ‘EXO’ in April 2012. In May 2014, he returned to China after becoming embroiled in a lawsuit with his agency over his exclusive contract.

He won the Best New Actor award at the London International Chinese Film Festival and the Best Actor award at the Tokyo Chinese Film Week Golden Crane Awards, attracting attention not only in Asia but also worldwide. He had over 50 million followers on ‘Weibo’.” (Writer with expertise in Asian entertainment)

In her letter of accusation, Ms. A wrote the following,

“Kris invites women under the pretext of casting discussions or fan meetings, usually late at night. Upon meeting, he makes them drink alcohol and coerces them into sexual relations. Kris has never used contraception, and he has never fulfilled the promised support for our entertainment activities, either for me or other women.

After engaging in sexual relations, Kris’s side transferred 500,000 yuan (about 8.5 million yen) several times for hush money. I am currently in the process of arranging repayment. The number of victims, including minors, exceeds seven. I hope to be the last victim and want to fight openly and fairly.”

The day after Ms. A made the accusation (July 19), Kris immediately issued a rebuttal, displaying a firm stance on his own social media accounts.

“I met that woman (Ms. A) only once at a gathering with friends last December (2020). I did not offer her alcohol or anything of the sort. Throughout my life, I have never engaged in any behavior that would be considered problematic. I am willing to take responsibility for all my words and actions.”

But the furor has not died down.

“On the internet, footage allegedly showing a man believed to be Kris engaging in lewd acts with women at a club has surfaced. Companies that have been using him as their image model have been canceling contracts one after another. Cosmetic brand ‘Lancôme’ and confectionery manufacturer ‘Liangpin Puzi’ have withdrawn advertisements featuring Kris. China’s television station ‘CCTV’ removed promotional materials for Kris’s new song in May 2021.” (Previously mentioned journalist)

Former globally renowned singer designated as a serious criminal. It’s unlikely that they will ever appear before fans again as an artist.
