Ota City, Gunma Prefecture: A Walk in a Deep Town of Chaos: “Brazil City” Reflects “A Little Hope for Japan

Ota City and Oizumi-cho, Gunma Prefecture: A Transformation of a Pleasure Town Once Supported by Subaru and Panasonic One out of Five Foreigners Nowadays, the issue of foreign workers has become an overblown issue.

In the town of Oizumi, there is a facility called “Brazilian Plaza” that supports the employment of Brazilians. It used to be a shopping center.
TAKARA, a supermarket that sells Brazilian foodstuffs, offers pork spare ribs, grilled beef thighs, and other common Brazilian dishes.
TAKARA stocks many popular South American products, such as Inca Cola.
Although fewer in number than in the past, Filipino pubs in Ota City are still alive and well. Many women were calling out for customers.
Many foreigners, including Brazilians, Filipinos, and Nepalese, live in municipal housing in Ota City.
Signs at garbage collection points are written in Portuguese as well as Japanese. Devices for coexistence were seen here and there in the town.
