Hugh Grant, the King of Romantic Comedies, Reveals His Secret to Being a Popular Guy

On a mid-November evening, a dandy-looking foreign couple was walking in the streets of Roppongi (Minato-ku, Tokyo). The man was movie actor Hugh Grant, 63.

“He has been a handsome actor in romantic comedy films for more than 20 years, including “Four Weddings” and “Notting Hill,” since he was in his 30s, and is known as the “king of romantic comedies””

“This time, he was in Japan with his wife, a TV producer, to promote the movie “Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” (opening in theaters nationwide on December 8), which is a derivative of the hit movie “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” starring Johnny Depp.”

 

He is indeed a date man, as he looks like he is in a scene from a movie, whether he is strolling aimlessly through the streets of Roppongi or holding a tray at a hamburger store. In his new movie, he abandons the two-faced character he has been known for and takes on the role of an eccentric dwarf called Oompa-Loompa, a role familiar to fans of his previous films.

 

This was Hugh’s eighth visit to Japan in six years, and on November 20, he attended the “Magical Chocolate Night,” a chocolate carpet event held at Roppongi Hills Arena. Hugh took the stage in front of a crowd of 1,200 people,

“People in Japan have always been warm to my work. Except for the women there.”

He excited the audience with his comments, as if he were a popular guy,

“I really enjoy Japan, and sometimes my challenge is that I have too much fun when I come to Japan. I once made a journalist who came to interview me disappointed because I was having so much fun that I got sick.”

He added, “Actually, my wife is also coming to Japan this time, and she drinks like a drunkard.”

Come to think of it, when I saw him carrying coffee for his wife at a café, I got the impression that he was being groomed by his wife. Perhaps that is the secret to his continued popularity.
