<p><span class="strongInContent"> The defendant&#8217;s crime was premeditated and malicious, including the purchase of a knife in advance.</span></p>
<p> The prosecutors concluded that Nagakubo had committed the crime.</p>

<p> On December 1, Koji Nagakubo, 43, was tried for the first time in Saitama District Court on charges including arrest and confinement. In June 2010, Nagakubo threatened a female employee of an Internet cafe in Kawagoe City, Saitama Prefecture, with a box cutter knife and locked himself in a private room for five hours. He then demanded that she &#8220;take off her clothes,&#8221; and attempted to sexually assault her, causing her to suffer injuries.</p>
<p><span class="strongInContent"> Nagakubo took a 22-year-old female part-time worker hostage and holed herself up in a private room at around 10 p.m. on June 21, 2010. When asked by the police over the intercom whether the hostage was safe or not, Nagakubo replied, &#8220;Shut up, you son of a bitch! and other such words in his voice. About five hours after the incident, he was persuaded by the police and caught red-handed. He told investigators that he was fed up with his life and wanted to go back to prison.</span></p>
<p><span class="strongInContent"> In November 2012, Nagakubo was involved in another case of a stand-in in Toyokawa City, Aichi Prefecture. He held customers and staff hostage at a Toyokawa Shinkin Bank store for an extended period of time. They demanded the resignation of then Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda. After his arrest, he was sentenced to 9 years in prison in April &#8217;13. He was released from prison in April 2010.</span></p>
<p> In the December 14, 2012 issue of &#8220;FRIDAY,&#8221; a detailed report was published on a stand-in case in Toyokawa City that Nagakubo had caused. We would like to recount the detailed circumstances of Nagakubo&#8217;s falsehoods and troubles (some parts have been corrected).</p>
<h2> My parents abandoned me.</h2>

<p><span class="strongInContent"> When I was standing in line in front of an ATM, I saw a suspicious man wandering back and forth near the counter.</span></p>
<p> A female customer at the scene of the incident in Toyokawa City said, &#8220;I was standing in line in front of the ATM, and there was a suspicious man wandering around the counter.</p>
<p> On November 22, 2012, the defendant Nagakubo holed up in the Kurashiko branch of the Toyokawa Shinkin Bank with a survival knife. He held a total of five customers and staff hostage for 13 hours. At dawn, a special investigation team from the Aichi Prefectural Police raided the branch, caught him red-handed, and rescued the hostages without incident.</p>
<p> At the time, Nagakubo&#8217;s behavior was viewed as problematic. A reporter from a national newspaper who covered the incident said, &#8220;Nagakubo is a rehabilitated person in many places.</p>
<p><span class="strongInContent"> Nagakubo had been moving from rehabilitation facility to rehabilitation facility in various places, and had been saying that he was abandoned by his parents when he was a child and that he was poor. This story was circulated, and at the time, commentators on wide-ranging TV shows said that the family environment may have been the cause of the incident.</span></p>
<p> However, the facts are different. When a reporter visited Hokuto City in Yamanashi Prefecture, Nagakubo&#8217;s hometown, he found that his statement was a lie. The family home was a somewhat old house, but it was a large two-story house with a large yard. A neighbor said, &#8220;Koji was born in that house.</p>
<p><span class="strongInContent"> Koji was born in that house and lived there until he graduated from school. He was an ordinary child, nothing unusual. His parents were serious people, and his father worked at a local manufacturing company. Koji was the oldest of four siblings, and his grandfather lived with them.</span></p>

<p>Nagakubo went on to an agricultural high school. In his graduation album, there is a picture of Nagakubo riding on a tractor with a playful catchphrase &#8220;My Porsche. He was also a member of the soft tennis club, and from the pictures of those days, he appears to be just as the neighborhood residents described him as &#8220;an ordinary kid with nothing unusual about him.</p>
<p> The turning point came shortly after he entered a university in the prefecture. At the time, an acquaintance of Nagakubo&#8217;s told us, &#8220;He was 19 years old and a classmate at the university.</p>
<p><span class="strongInContent"> He got married to a college classmate when he was 19. We dropped out of school and lived in an apartment as newlyweds, but we divorced shortly after.</span></p>
<p> After that, he became estranged from his local friends. However, it seems that he was still in the &#8220;habit of telling falsehoods. The acquaintance continues.</p>
<p><span class="strongInContent"> When I met him in town 10 years ago (after the incident in Toyokawa), he told everyone that he was a yakuza driver. If that were true, it would have been talked about locally, but I haven&#8217;t heard it from anyone else.&#8221;</span></p>
<p> Nagakubo had been involved in theft and fraud cases for several years prior to the Toyokawa incident, and had repeatedly been in and out of prison. Although he was released from prison in April 2010, he committed another burglary shortly afterward.</p>
<p> He may have meant what he said when he said, &#8220;I wanted to go back to prison. However, it is outrageous that he would involve the general public with such selfish motives.</p>
