 The trial for the bizarre case of a toddler abused by three men and a woman who lived together, who lost their lives and had their bodies buried under the floor, began on August 28 at the Saitama District Court, the jury trial of Chika Kakimoto, 31, a temp worker, and Hiroki Niwa, 36, an unemployed defendant, who are accused of inflicting bodily injury and abandoning a corpse. Kakimoto is the mother of the deceased Ayumu, then 5, who lived at Niwa&#8217;s house.

 Yoko Ishii, 55, Niwa&#8217;s common-law wife, also lived in the house in Honjo City, Saitama Prefecture, where the incident took place. They repeatedly abused Ayumu by hanging him upside down and other horrific acts. Ayumu died in January 2010. In the trial that has just started, both Kakimoto and Niwa have admitted to the charges against them, saying that there is no doubt about it,&#8221; said a reporter in charge of judicial affairs for a national newspaper.

 The full details of the tragic case in which the body of a young child was found in the ground are now becoming clear from the statements of the three defendants, including the child&#8217;s mother.

 The body of Ayumu, who lived in Honjo City, Saitama Prefecture, was found in the garden of his home on March 5, 2010. The Saitama Prefectural Police found Ayumu&#8217;s body about three weeks later. On March 26, about three weeks later, the Saitama Prefectural Police re-arrest Ayumu&#8217;s mother, Kakimoto, Niwa, and Ishii, on charges of inflicting injury and death, alleging that she had repeatedly thrown Ayumu to the floor of their home and caused his death. The police had been investigating the case, believing that the abuse had been a daily occurrence.
 The police were investigating the incident as follows: &#8220;The first time something unusual happened was on January 12. Eight days later, on January 20, defendant Kakimoto submitted a notice of withdrawal. He explained to the preschool that he was living in Izumi City, Osaka Prefecture, where his parents lived, and that he was doing well.
 However, when Honjo City made an inquiry to Izumi City, they found that there was no evidence of relocation. Honjo City consulted the police, saying, &#8220;We can&#8217;t confirm the safety of the children. When the police asked Niwa and the other three defendants, who lived together, about the situation, they admitted that they had buried the bodies in their yard in mid-January.
 Initially, the three were arrested on suspicion of abandoning the body. The cause of Ayumu&#8217;s death was unknown, but it was discovered from the defendants&#8217; statements that he had been severely beaten.

 The three defendants lived together in a 50-year-old wooden house in Honjo City. They are not related by blood. Their strange life together began in January 2009.
 After separating from her husband, Kakimoto was raising Ayumu by herself. It was around the fall of 2009 that she met defendant Niwa. After a while, Kakimoto and Ayumu moved in together at the house where Niwa and Ishii lived.

 After they began living together, Ayumu&#8217;s strange behavior was frequently observed.
 The four of them, including Ayumu, often visited a restaurant near their home. However, Ayumu was scolded by defendant Niwa all the time and was not allowed to eat enough food. At one point, he was made to sit on his knees for two hours. &#8230;&#8230; We heard that Kakimoto once tried to film Ayumu being scolded with a smart phone.
 In a supermarket parking lot, a resident witnessed defendant Ishii yelling at Ayumu, &#8220;You little brat! at Ayumu in the parking lot of a supermarket. Kakimoto always looked tired. Ayumu was often absent-minded at the daycare center, and people around him were concerned that he might be mentally abusive.

 On January 18, 2010, the worst was to come. On the first floor of their home, the three defendants repeatedly threw Ayumu to the floor, allegedly causing his death.
 Ayumu had a large scratch on the back of his head, which was the direct cause of his death. Ayumu was originally a cheerful and vivacious child, but after he began living with the three defendants, he became increasingly listless.
 Ayumu was severely abused and buried in the ground. The two defendants who appeared in court this time are scheduled to be sentenced on September 8.
