In yakuza films, there is always a beautiful woman next to a yakuza, such as Naoko Watanabe (38) in “Outrage” (’10) directed by Takeshi Kitano (’76) or Machiko Ono (41) in “The Family with the Yakuza” (’21).

But what about the actual yakuza? A virtual youtuber (VTuber) by the name of “Jail Taro,” which refers to a person who has been in prison many times, and a former yakuza himself, talks about the yakuza’s situation with women.

He says, “Certainly, there were some actresses among those who were dating yakuza, but there were more normal people. However, many of those who had been with the yakuza for a long time were very daring, because they experienced many things that you don’t experience when you are living as a katagi (a word used to describe ordinary people).

Yakuza society is a society with a strong hierarchical relationship that can be compared to a parent-child relationship. For this reason, the dating partner of a clan leader is called “Anesan,” and a yakuza with a lower position may take care of his personal needs.

The problem is the relationship with the woman.

The most difficult question for a yakuza who is taking care of his personal affairs with an anesan is, “How many mistresses does our man have right now? If you tell the truth, you will be cut off by the clan leader. If I answer the truth, I would be betraying my clan leader, and if I lie, I don’t know what Miss Miss will say to my clan leader. So when I was asked, I was really embarrassed (laughs). Besides, it was a strange relationship because when the relationship between the head of the clan and the Misses ends, they become strangers, so it is not good to get too friendly with them.”

Many of the groups have had major troubles due to problems around these women.

Yakuza and women have such a mysterious relationship. Where and how do they meet in the first place? According to Taro Jongjo, they usually meet in clubs and cabarets.

Women trained in the mizu-shobai business do well in the yakuza world,” he said. However, it is difficult for them to get married and register their children’s names in consideration of their children’s lives, and weddings are not held with the entire clan unless there is a big problem. It is not possible for the older members to come out for the younger ones, and by the time they become the older ones, they are no longer old enough to hold weddings.

In the past, only the birth of a child was celebrated with a pair, but in this day and age, doing so would cause problems for the child’s job hunting, etc., so we don’t do it anymore. If you have a yakuza in your family, it will be difficult to join a publicly traded company or become a civil servant.

The position of women in yakuza society is quite difficult, as they cannot be registered and become complete strangers when they separate. However, just because a woman is the child of a yakuza does not mean that she has to become a yakuza, she says.

No parent would want their adorable child to serve time in prison or to live in a strict room and undergo training. If they can’t do that, they won’t be accepted by others if they become yakuza. Basically, there is no blood inheritance in a yakuza clan unless there is a serious problem. Therefore, it is not true that you have to become a yakuza because you are a child of a yakuza.

A woman who has made the choice to live in a yakuza society that is so harsh on women may truly be a loving person.

Read “Gokudo Rakuen,” an ultra-realistic manga about the yakuza world supervised by “Jigyotaro,” a man who knows the yakuza world inside and out.
