 In a jury trial held on March 8, the Odawara Branch of the Yokohama District Court sentenced Rena Nagasawa, 22, an unemployed defendant, to three years and six months in prison.  On August 2 of last year, Nagasawa was arrested by the Atsugi Police Station of the Kanagawa Prefectural Police on suspicion of abandonment by a person responsible for the protection of her children. He left his two toddlers in the car during a hot summer day, and both children lost their lives.
 The incident took place on the afternoon of July 29 last year. The maximum temperature that day was over 33 degrees Celsius. It was just before 5:00 p.m. when Nagasawa called 119 and said, &#8216;My two children are sick. The location was the parking lot of &#8220;Bosai no Oka Park&#8221; in Atsugi City.
 When paramedics rushed to the scene, the two toddlers were limp. The eldest son was unconscious and transported to the hospital, where he was quickly pronounced dead. As a result of the autopsy, the cause of death was determined to be heat stroke, and the 2-year-old daughter also died on August 2.

About two weeks earlier, he left his eldest son in the car while he went shopping in the town of Samukawa in the central part of the prefecture.  At the time of his arrest, Nagasawa reportedly stated, &#8220;I was not going to be a nuisance to people around me, so I left the car for 30 minutes.

 However, numerous inconsistencies emerged, including the fact that he was unaware of the child&#8217;s deteriorating health until he became unconscious. As the police proceeded with their investigation, they discovered that Nagasawa had lied.
