Only one month remains until the end of the morning information program “Sukkiri” (Nippon Television Network Corporation).

Launched in 2006, the program, whose MC Koji Kato’s sharp-tongued talk has been well received by a wide range of generations, has been engaged in a morning ratings battle with “Mezamashi 8” (Fuji TV, from 2021) and “Hatori Shinichi Morning Show” (TV Asahi, from 2015), which came later in the series.

Kato has been a critic of Yoshimoto Kogyo’s stance on the so-called “black market” problem of Yoshimoto’s comedians that came to light in 2019. The loss of Yoshimoto’s backing is said to be a remote cause of the show’s demise, but the fact that it can no longer compete with its two rivals in viewer ratings is believed to be the main reason for the reorganization.

(Sports newspaper entertainment desk) “Sukkiri” has been on the air for 17 years. Sukkiri” had a “unique line” that other programs did not have. It actively featured live appearances by foreign artists.

In the past, world-famous artists such as Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, and Ed Sheeran have appeared live on the program. They sang and performed on the program, and even had a “cheeky” chat with Kato. This year, up-and-coming artists such as the British duo Wet Leg and Norwegian diva Aurora appeared on “Sukkiri” one after another when they came to Japan to perform.

A decade ago, music programs in the prime time slot such as “M-Station (Music Station)” (TV Asahi) were the stage for appearances by foreign artists, but music programs have completely lost their power. In addition to budget problems, there is the problem that counterparts to negotiate with overseas record companies and offices are becoming scarce.

In fact, “Sukkiri” had a “key person” who actively used foreign artists. A source at NTV reveals who this person was.

A staff member at a production company involved in “Sukkiri” discovered Lady Gaga, who was not that famous at the time, and featured her on the program, which became a hot topic among foreign artists. It was a trend. There are even cases where we suddenly receive reverse offers to appear on the show right before it airs. It is a tough job on the spot because it is a live broadcast, but Mr. Kato himself loves this kind of sudden turn of events and enjoys it. Relevant The staff left “Sukkiri” several years ago to produce another program, but it is a great achievement that the program’s name has become established among overseas music people.

Will we see more foreign artists appearing on the successor program starting in April?
