In this article, we will examine some excerpts from “Tokyo Poverty Girls. Kabukicho and the Poor Girls” (Takarajima Shinsho), the latest work by Atsuhiko Nakamura, a nonfiction writer who has made a splash with such works as “The Devil’s Inclination,” and excerpts and edits from it cut into the taboo of “sex and money,” the darkness of Kabukicho that no one has been able to touch.

The Kabukicho woman introduced here is Hiromi Nagoya (pseudonym, age 30), whose husband is a yakuza and who works at a club where yakuza gather. Born in Nagano Prefecture, she ran away from home after being abused by her mother. While wandering around downtown Nagano in search of a place to stay, she was caught by a host, and to pay his fee, she has been working in a pin salon since she was 17 years old.

She recalls her life to date at a club in the middle of a yakuza meeting.

Working 12 hours a day in a pin salon, paid 3,000 yen a day

Hiromi Nagoshi hid her age, but she was popular with male customers because she looked like a minor and could earn 40,000 to 50,000 yen a day. In addition, if she did the main act as a backstage pull, male customers would pay her 10,000 yen plus.

A scene in Kabukicho

“The daily wage was something like 80,000 yen. But I spent it all at a host club in the same building. Because I was lonely. I depended on the hosts who were kind to me. Toward the end, my host lived with me, and I was happy. I felt he cared about me. At the time, I thought he was kind, but now I think it was weird because he was like, “Good luck with your work. If you think about it, you don’t like it when the guy you like tells you to work hard at your sex life, don’t you? At the time, I had no idea. I thought I was being cared for by the man in charge.”

While living together, it was discovered that she was underage.

The moment he found out she was 17, his hurriedly packed his bags and left. “Where are you going?” I asked, but he gave me no answer. My phone was rejected and I couldn’t get in touch with him. I was fired from the health club and couldn’t stay in the city anymore.

“At that time, I was on the third floor (health club) and the fourth floor (host club) of the same building, with money keeps on coming. I knew I could make money the next day, so I didn’t care how much money I spent at the host club. But the sudden loss of my host was so damaging that I couldn’t recover for a while.”

He went to another downtown area in Nagano Prefecture and lived in a manga cafe for a while.

“When I turned 18, I worked as a delicatessen in that town. I was making a lot of money. But I got into color management in the store. I was color-managed by a handsome staff member, and I fell in love with him. I moved in with him in the dormitory. But he got serious with another girl and left me and moved to another bar. I was lonely, so I went crazy for a guy at the bar, and he was a thug. That guy managed to ogle me, and now I’ve been sent to a pincarlo.”

The thug of the bar whom I liked suddenly said, “You, there is an account receivable of 600,000 yen. I didn’t remember, but he repeatedly threatened me with intimidation. I nodded because I had no choice when it came to the story that I should work in the pinsaro and return it.

I believed that there was it though there was no account receivable. So I paid it. I was sent to a pinsaro, but in fact, the punk and the pinsaro were connected. I was made to pay an account that didn’t exist, and the thug also got a scouting commission, so all the money I worked for ended up going to the thug.

I was forced to work 12 hours a day in the pinsaro and received only 3,000 yen a day. After a long period of not being able to eat enough food, he indeed woke up. The hoodlums contacted me every day. When he was hunted down, what came to mind was the existence of his father, who had left him when he was a child.

While the audience was being drawn into the harsh narrative, the “Hiromi Go stage” was started by the yakuza in the restaurant. One of the group yakuza stripped naked. One of the group yakuza stripped naked on the top half of his body and had a magnificent Japanese carving on it. The yakuza requested “240 Million Eyes” and then walked out of the restaurant. As the bass root playing intro started, the Yakuza appeared through the door with great vigor. Hiromi Go appeared on stage, or so it seemed.

The yakuza, naked in the upper half of their bodies, danced in the middle of the store, kunekune, and the yakuza were incredibly excited. The yakuza’s three-fingered microphone grip became even more intense, and the guitar distortion made him jump up and down before the song began, and after the B-melody, he maneuvered the microphone with his brilliant hands, never failing to wink at the perfect moment.

Exotic Japan! Japan!

At the end, all the yakuza sang in chorus. Talking about anything dark during a feverish mood could get you in trouble. A former writer who was present at the party was smart enough to join the Hiromi Go chorus on the yakuza side. Shaking his fist in the air with the yakuza, he exclaimed, “Japan!” and exclaiming, “Japan!

The Hiromi Go stage ended with an earth-shattering climax. The half-naked yakuza returned to the doorway with his back to the audience, winked at them, and walked out. In the midst of the unusual heat, Hiromi Nagoya began to tell the rest of the story.

She said, “I took a copy of his family register and looked for his father’s whereabouts. I found many addresses in Roppongi, and he had moved many times. I sent letters to those addresses. Then I found out that he was in Kawasaki, and the letter was forwarded to him. I got a call telling me to come to his place. So I went to Kawasaki. My father was working as a boy at a sex club.

Hiromi remembers that her father was kind to Hiromi Nagoshi and was shocked when he divorced her. She was five years old when the divorce took place, and she was reunited with her father for the first time in 13 years. I hugged him, a nostalgic sight I vaguely remember. I was happy to see him.

He never hit me, and he was kind. I talked to him and he said, ‘I’ll stay by your side, and you can work at your own place. Sex Cabaret in Kawasaki. I thought it would be a way to show my filial piety, so I went to work there. Within six months, I was number one. I couldn’t drink alcohol, but I forced myself to drink and let him touch my tits, and I became number one. My father had remarried to a Korean. After I started earning money, he made me send money to his wife’s family in Korea.

When she became number one in the nomination, she earned 1.2 million yen a month. The money he spent on his father and his second marriage increased day by day.

My father loved backroom casinos, and I would go with him and give him money. When I think about it now, it’s very strange. After a while, I reached my limit. Working in the water business comes and goes mentally. I felt like I didn’t want to be touched anymore. That’s when it happened. At Kawasaki station, I asked my father, “Why don’t you want me to touch your boobs? It’s a simple thing. It’s not something that decreases. Those words hurt me. Being touched by a man I didn’t know was still weird. I had put up with it for my father’s sake for a long time, but I had reached my limit.

‘Stimulants made sex work less painful.’

She is 21 years old. After cutting ties with her father, who saw his daughter only as money, she next moved to Shibuya. In Shibuya, she became addicted to drugs.

She started living alone in Shibuya and got caught by a scout. I was introduced to a hotelier and entered the dormitory there. At that time, I met a yakuza from the scouting area, who showed me the clubs, and I fell in love with clubs. I went from legal drugs to legal herbs, then methamphetamines, and so on. Eventually, I started banging around with a syringe. It was like, “If I do drugs, I can do my best. Just like Red Bull. Do you understand? They said, “As long as I have this, I’ll be fine. For example, there are nutritional drinks, right? If you drink it, you’ll be fine.

In the waiting room of the hotel, there were some illegal herbs. The supplier of the herbs recommended stimulants to me, and I tried searing. I thought it was great and got more and more addicted.

When I did stimulants, sex work became less painful. It was the first time I felt like I was having fun in sexual service.

“I can work hard at anything. I can work hard at my job. For example, a very dirty old man looks cool. So work was not that difficult. That’s why I worked all the time. But the amount of work I did was enough to buy stimulants, which made me work harder. It became an unending loop, and I had nothing left. The price of methamphetamine was 18,000 yen per gram. I couldn’t quit drugs altogether.”

Stimulants also have the effect of increasing motivation and tension. But a side effect called “intuition” also occurred.

I thought, ‘Maybe the police are here. Like, “Maybe the police are here. But nobody was there. So I looked through the peephole in the door, and it was like I could see all the way down to the dormitory where I lived. Like there was a spiral staircase and you could see all the way down. That kind of thing. Then the store found out I was on methamphetamines, and I got fired.

He is 23 years old. When his drug addiction was exposed and he could no longer stay in Shibuya, he headed for Kabukicho.

I came to Kabukicho without a destination. I thought that since I could manage in Shibuya, Kabukicho would be okay, too. At first I was living in a hotel and earning money at a coffee shop. Prostitution. I was selling to one or two people a day for 20,000 yen or so. I met my current husband while playing in a backroom casino. He asked me if I wanted to come and live with him. I started living with him.

Three years ago, when she was 26, her child was born.

On the east side of Kabukicho 2-chome, there are not only love hotels but also many rental apartments where one can live alone. Three parents and three children live in Kabukicho.

She said, “I live in Kabukicho and have a three-year-old child. Both my husband and I used to do stimulants, but we stopped when we got pregnant. My husband also quit. When we met, he had an income, but since the birth of our child, he has had no income. I think he doesn’t want to get caught. So I just have to hang in there.”

The conversation ended. The time is around 24:00.

She said that her husband was still at home taking care of the children. Finally, she showed me a picture of her husband. He was a yakuza who was a martial arts fighter.

The high tension in the yakuza seats continued. They have been getting excited ever since the Hiromi Go stage. After thanking Hiromi Nagoya, she went into the middle of the yakuza seats.
