The suspect in the attack on Mr. Miyadai is believed to have committed suicide. Will the truth of the incident ever be uncovered…

A person believed to be the suspect in the incident in which Tokyo Metropolitan University professor Shinji Miyadai was slashed and seriously injured on campus has been found dead.

The suspect was 41 years old from Sagamihara City, and his mother found him hanging in another house about 300 meters away from her home on December 17, 2011. There was a suicide note, but there was no mention of Mr. Miyadai’s case. Ms. Miyadai told the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department’s Investigation Department that she had no idea who this man was.

The incident occurred on the evening of November 29, 2011, when Miyadai was walking alone on campus after a lecture. A large man of about 180 to 190 cm in height attacked him with a knife, injuring Miyadai in dozens of places on his body, including his neck, ears, and legs. The wound on his knee was particularly deep, cutting about 10 centimeters into it.

Immediately afterward, he underwent two surgeries on two separate days, and received so many stitches that he “lost count of how many stitches he had throughout his body. After being discharged from the hospital, he underwent hard rehabilitation, and now, two months later, he is making a miraculous recovery.

Immediately after his discharge from the hospital, Mr. Miyatai began speaking out on the Internet, sharing his “impressions of the incident” and “preventing misinterpretations” of his writings. On the other hand, he has not provided details of the incident.

He refrained from giving interviews about the details of the case “from the viewpoint of avoiding provoking the culprit and hindering the progress of the investigation.”

The company refrained from responding to interviews about the details of the case “in order to avoid provoking the perpetrators and to avoid impeding the progress of the investigation. The decision was made after consulting with the Investigation Section 1. According to the official website of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, the “Summary of the Case” is as follows

According to the official website of the Metropolitan Police Department, the “summary of the case” is as follows: “With the intent to kill, he stabbed the victim several times in the neck with a knife he was carrying, and the victim suffered injuries that required one month of total recovery. However, he only injured the victim, who will be completely healed in one month, and did not achieve the purpose of the murder.

The victim was not killed.

I don’t want people to think I’m talking from a safe zone.”

On January 30, Miyadai gave his first “face-to-face lecture” after the incident under tight security. After speaking to an audience of about 50 people at Tokyo College of Music, he told reporters

I am happy to be able to speak directly to so many people’s faces. Although he has recovered to some extent from the wounds on his neck and legs, he still feels the effects of the attack, such as walking without protection when using the stairs. I just don’t want the attacks to scare me into staying in the safe zone and not going out.”

He appealed to the audience not to be frightened by the violence and not to be deflated by it.

The suspect was captured by several security cameras in the area, and the footage was released to the public early on, but it did not lead to his arrest, and some questioned the lack of progress in the investigation. The suspect had committed suicide shortly after the public release.

The “death” of the suspect, whose whereabouts were being pursued by the Investigation Section 1 on suspicion of attempted murder, is a sudden development, but the “truth” of the crime that threatened speech is still awaited to be uncovered.

Shinji Miyadai has continued to speak out while seriously injured. The suspect’s death has taken the focus off the case.
