 A man was arrested for posting slanderous remarks about his ex-wife on his Twitter account. The man was a well-known former professional Go player with an 8-dan ranking.

 The suspect, Takanori Hashimoto, 39, of Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City, was arrested by the Otsu Police Station of the Shiga Prefectural Police on January 17 on suspicion of defamation. In November last year, he repeatedly tweeted defamatory remarks about his divorced ex-wife, Mrs. A. On January 11, Ms. A filed a criminal complaint against Hashimoto, claiming that her reputation had been damaged.
 In August 2009, Hashimoto posted that Ms. A had been &#8220;tormented and deprived of her job and child&#8221; and was arrested last December and charged by the Otsu District Court in Shiga Prefecture, where Ms. A lives.

 Hashimoto entered the world of professional Go players in April 2001, when he was 18 years old. He competed with Sota Fujii and Zenji Hanyu, and his total record was 414 wins and 303 losses, and his rank was 8-dan. He was called the &#8220;heretic of the shogi world&#8221; because he wore his hair blond with a perm and looked at the camera during games.

 In April 2009, Hashimoto, who was nicknamed &#8220;Hussey&#8221; and a top-class chess player in terms of both popularity and ability, suddenly submitted a notice of retirement to the Japan Shogi Federation.
 He and Ms. A were going through a divorce trouble. According to what Hashimoto told the media, including &#8220;Shukan Josei&#8221; (April 27, 2009 issue), when he returned to his home in Shiga Prefecture after finishing a game in Tokyo in July 2007, he found that Ms. A had disappeared with their newborn son.

 It wasn&#8217;t until last year that the divorce was finally finalized. He must have been under a lot of stress because of the trouble over custody. Hashimoto is a serious and stubborn person by nature. Slandering him is definitely not a good thing to do, but it is possible that his long-accumulated frustration may have exploded.
 The suspect&#8217;s social networking activities had been gradually decreasing, but last August he resumed his YouTube channel, which he had stopped for a long time, saying that he had &#8220;gotten over the worst period.
