Tetsuya Komuro’s Surprising Technique for Dealing with the Accusations of “Resumption of Activities
Kei Komuro and Princess Mako Akishino announced their marriage. I’m not sure what to make of that. It would not be an exaggeration to say that there has not been a day without news related to Mr. Komuro. In the midst of all this, Tetsuya Komuro, the “Komuro” of the entertainment world, has made his move.
He recently announced that he would be resuming his performing career, but it is still fresh in our minds that he held a press conference in January 2006 in response to the “infidelity” report in the Shukan Bunshun. At the press conference, he announced his retirement from music, but denied having an affair with the female nurse he was reportedly dating. He revealed that he was mentally fatigued while taking care of his wife, KEIKO, and that he was also suffering from hepatitis C and sudden hearing loss, and that he felt that his creative abilities were limited. She said that she had decided to retire because it had become difficult for her to continue her creative activities.
He also said that his retirement was his way of “making up for” the affair. The reporters in the hall could not hide their surprise at this. It was such a confusing press conference that some of the female reporters were in tears saying, “Mr. Komuro, please don’t quit.
Because of this press conference, the “Shukan Bunshun” became a bit of a villain for forcing the “rare genius” to retire. Perhaps Mr. Komuro’s secret plan to change the subject was successful, and there was little criticism of him.
Four years have now passed since then.
Opinions abound regarding his resumption of activities and return to the entertainment industry, but was he really planning to retire in the first place? Few people in the entertainment industry, including the media, really thought that he was going to retire.
“The year after his press conference, he began to work for companies in the architecture and art fields, using a piano and synthesizer to create music, without mentioning his own name. In ʼ20, he provided music for Nogizaka46. In addition, they have resumed activities such as outdoor concerts at Chiboga-hama, radio appearances as TM NETWORK, and stage performances by the three of them” (music magazine writer).
In May this year, it was announced that the new Lynx Eyes song “#ALL FRIENDS” was provided by Mr. Komuro. So, it is natural that some people frowned at the announcement of her retirement as well, wondering if it was a lie after all.
In fact, there is a big difference between the “activities” she has been engaged in since her retirement press conference and the “activities” she has announced to resume this time.
“At his retirement press conference, Mr. Komuro said, “My voluntary music activities will end today. All of his activities up to now have been at the request of others. So there was no “lie” in his words. This time, he is resuming his activities as a member of TM NETWORK, and this is truly a voluntary musical activity. I’m sure there will be some people who will protest against this,” said a writer for a music magazine.
(The writer of the aforementioned music magazine) Mr. Komuro was not negligent in this regard and made the following comments on the resumption of his activities in light of the criticism.
Once again, I apologize for the trouble I have caused you, and for the worry and inconvenience I have caused you.
Please let me do music for a while now. Please let me work.
Although my physical strength has regressed, I feel that my ideas and energy for creating music are definitely evolving.
TM wants to work in TM’s own way. I want to create in my own way.
Even though I have made many mistakes, I still have friends who push me to do better.
I have fans who are waiting for me.
I want to do everything I can in the time I have left and light up the world with my music, even if just a little.
I was inspired to think about a lot of things in this Corona disaster.
I am filled with gratitude every day.
I will never forget this feeling, and from now on, I will work hard to create again.
Tetsuya Komuro
This comment somehow conveys a sense of earnestness, and I think it will reduce the criticism. Also, an entertainment industry insider said that resuming activities as a group, rather than alone, may have lowered the hurdle.
“I think Komuro-san is a person who is not satisfied unless he is out there. Not only does he want to write songs, he also wants to perform them himself. However, it is impossible for him to work with “Globe”, so he decided to work with “TM NETWORK” at ……. TM had been inactive for six years, and fans were eager to see it resume its activities. Mr. Komuro is an indispensable member of the band, and I’m sure he would welcome the resumption. In a way, I thought it was a clever move to use ‘TM’ as a cover to resume their activities.
I have to take my hat off to Mr. Komuro’s “technique” of constantly appealing to the public’s emotions, as in his retirement press conferences, but it has been said for a long time that “the retirement of an entertainer is not really retirement. There have been more than a few entertainers who have announced their retirement and have not returned. If that’s the case, Komuro’s resumption of his career should be nothing to sneeze at.
As long as he says that his “ideas and energy are definitely evolving,” I hope he will be able to deliver hit songs that surpass those of his heyday. That’s what the fans want most of all.
