Interview with Mimu Yamashita, the youngest queen of the year, reveals her “humble ambition

I had my sights set on both No. 1 and the queen of the money, but I never thought I would win either. It was all thanks to my father who supported me.

Miyu Yamashita, 21, a women’s golf player, said with a smile on her face. This year, she was ranked No. 1 in the Mercedes ranking and won a record-breaking prize money of over 235 million yen, which catapulted her to stardom. She has risen to stardom.

In the beginning of this season, I was failing to qualify for the next round. At that time, my father pointed out to me the rhythm of my shots so that I would not hit the ball too fast, and I got better. My father always checks the U.S. Men’s Tour and stays up late at night to watch the majors. On the contrary, I sleep soundly (laughs). He is a dedicated researcher and always gives me sound advice, so I trust him.

While she has dominated the tour with her overwhelming strength, away from the competition, she is just an ordinary girl.

Her hobby is collecting cosmetics. But there are a lot of things I don’t know how to use. My parents are aghast, saying, ‘Why do you buy things when you’re not finished with them? I am also addicted to the smartphone game “Disney Tsum Tsum. I play against my father, but I can’t win at all. Every time I play against him, I think to myself, “I can only play golf!　(laughs).

Finally, when asked about his aspirations for the upcoming season, he again revealed his enthusiasm with a serious expression on his face.

I realized how scary it is to be in a position where you are being chased. But I don’t want to be on the defensive just because I’m scared, I want to play aggressive golf. If I can surpass myself this year, that would make me the happiest.
