Okumura allegedly poured boiling water on a senior graduate student, severely burning him.

A security guard patrolling the station’s deserted, early morning premises must have been startled by the sight of a man lying on his back on a bench, his entire body severely burned.

The man lying on his back on a bench had severe burns all over his body. The skin on his face was peeling off and his skin was cruelly sore. A security guard called 119 and immediately rushed him to the hospital. The man was treated in the intensive care unit for six days and survived.

On October 4, the Metropolitan Police Department’s Investigation Division 1 called the police to investigate the death of Okumura, an employee of Mitsubishi UFJ Information Technology Co. He is suspected of inflicting serious injuries to Mr. A, an acquaintance in his 30s, by pouring boiling water on him, causing him to suffer a total of three months of recovery.

Mr. A was one of Okumura’s seniors in graduate school. In May of this year, Ms. A approached Mr. Okumura about a work-related problem. The suspect lied and demanded money, saying that he had borrowed 2 million yen from an anti-social force and used it to settle the problem.

When Mr. A balked at the demand, Okumura threatened that the anti-social forces would come to collect the money, and since June, the suspect has been cheating him out of 2.5 million yen worth of cash and other items. The suspect also sent Ms. A as many as 1,000 messages saying that she did not owe enough to pay her debts. In fact, there was no debt, but we heard that Ms. A was in a state of brainwashing,” said a reporter from the society section of a national newspaper.

The incident occurred on August 27. Okumura was told, “Give me back the money. Come here by 2:00 a.m.” He called Ms. A to a hotel in Shinbashi, Minato-ku, via SNS. What took place in the bathroom was a horrific assault.

The suspect made Ms. A get down on all fours and doused her dozens of times with boiling hot water from an electric kettle provided on the premises over her clothes. Mr. A was doused with boiling water for two hours during his stay at the hotel between 4:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. The burns covered 40% of her body. After the crime, we heard that Ms. A was in the water bath for a while.

Mr. A left the hotel after being told by Okumura, “You can go home,” and took a rest at the Shibakoen subway station, which is about a 10-minute walk away. He then arrived at JR Kawasaki Station around 8:30 pm. He lay down on a bench and became unconscious as it was. It was after 2:00 a.m. in the early morning of the next day when he was found by a security guard patrolling the premises,” he said.

After undergoing surgery in the intensive care unit, Ms. A finally regained consciousness about a week after the incident, and her testimony and the security camera footage made it clear that Okumura had committed the crime. Mr. Okumura admitted to the crime and testified that he was angry because Mr. A kept lying to him and that he could not repay his debts.

Mitsubishi UFJ Bank commented, “It is truly regrettable that a subsidiary employee was arrested. The Metropolitan Police Department plans to investigate Okumura on suspicion of extortion as well, believing that he had been pressuring Ms. A to repay a fictitious debt.
