[Joon] If you don’t eat at night, just say, “I’m tired,” and go to bed.

Don’t eat. If you throw up, you’ll be in trouble.

The mother had forced her young daughter, who was hospitalized, to fast over the phone.

On July 18, Osaka Prefectural Police Investigation Division 1 arrested Yoshizumi Nawata, 34, a part-time employee in Daito City, Osaka Prefecture, for cheating her out of mutual aid money and other benefits. This is the fourth time Nawata has been arrested on suspicion of attempted assault or coercion by forcing his 9-year-old daughter, A, to take laxatives.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of not feeding Ms. A for six days from January 22 to 27 this year, causing her to suffer from hypoglycemia, hospitalizing her, and extorting 60,000 yen in mutual-aid money. Ms. A was so small and skinny that she could hardly be considered an elementary school student.

This is not the first time the Nawata suspect has hospitalized his daughter. Since around February 2006, he has been prescribing laxatives and has had Ms. A repeatedly in and out of the hospital. Ms. A has been in and out of the hospital 43 times due to symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea. During that time, Nawata received approximately 5.7 million yen in mutual aid and insurance money.

The suspect forced Ms. A not to eat remotely while she was in the hospital, and when she complained that she was hungry, he would call her on the phone and tell her not to eat.

She has a chronic illness designated as an intractable disease.

In February of this year, a nurse overheard the mother and child talking on the speakers of their smartphones. The hospital, upon receiving the report, consulted the police, which led to the discovery of the incident.

The mother and child were probably trying to lower their blood sugar levels by not feeding them their school lunches,” the nurse said. Nawata explained to the elementary school Ms. A attended that ‘my daughter is in and out of the hospital repeatedly because she has a chronic illness designated as an incurable disease,’ and did not allow her to attend much.

However, according to the medical institution where Ms. A was hospitalized, no intractable disease was confirmed. When Mr. A occasionally went to school, he sent messages to his mother, such as “You can eat tomatoes,” even when he ate his school lunch. Nawata told her, “Don’t do it. If you throw up, you’ll be in trouble.

Ms. A told the police, “My mom told me it would be hard for me if I ate it. What is appalling is how Nawata used the large amount of money he swindled her out of.

After Ms. A was hospitalized, we know that she invited her boyfriend on a trip. He must have used the money to play with his girlfriend. Nawata also frequently went downtown to drink. It seems that he also used the money to pay for eating out and beauty treatments,” said another reporter from the Social Affairs Department.

In October 2010, two anonymous reports of suspected abuse were received in Daito City, where Nawata and Ms. A live. However, the city determined that there was no abuse after meeting with the mother and child. The city, however, decided not to provide information to the police.

Upon investigation, Nawata said, “I did not intentionally cause low blood sugar. He denies the crime, saying, “I did not intentionally cause low blood sugar, and I did not intend to deceive them.
