Getting into the University of Tokyo is a piece of cake!
I’ll tell you! Tokyo University is easy!
Study like you brush your teeth!

These lines were used in “Dragon Cherry Blossom” serialized in the manga magazine “Morning” from 2003 to 2007. 2018 will see the serialization of the sequel “Dragon Cherry Blossom 2”. In 2018, a sequel, “Dragon Cherry Blossom 2,” began serialization, and in 2021, a sequel to the TV drama will be broadcast.

The main character is Kenji Sakuragi, a former motorcycle gang member and rookie lawyer. In order to save Ryuzan High School, a private school that has gone bankrupt, he sets up a special class to help Mizuno Naomi and Yajima Yusuke, who have been assigned to the class, pass the entrance exam for Tokyo University.

The most appealing aspect of the work is the eccentric study methods. The work introduces a variety of study methods, from the bizarre, such as improving calculation skills by doing mental arithmetic while playing ping-pong, to the down-to-earth, such as writing a diary using English vocabulary learned that day. The book fundamentally rejected the conventional wisdom that in order to pass entrance exams to top universities, students need to have inborn abilities such as IQ and memory, and the idea that with effort and ingenuity it is possible to pass even the University of Tokyo was met with a huge response.

In fact, some people have actually succeeded in passing the entrance exam to the University of Tokyo thanks to “Dragon Cherry Blossom. Yuta Ueda (pseudonym), who did not perform well in elementary and junior high school and did not expect to pass the entrance exam to the University of Tokyo when he entered high school, became a student at the University of Tokyo after reading “Dragon Zakura.

The lines and ideas in “Dragon Zakura” changed the way I think about entrance examinations. I thought that I might be able to go to the University of Tokyo. In fact, by using the techniques in “Dragon Zakura,” I was able to greatly improve my deviation score, and just before the exam, I would read my favorite scenes to relieve my nerves. Even after entering the University of Tokyo, I was surprised to find that there were surprisingly many people around me who read the book (laughs).”

On January 14-15, the Common University Entrance Test will be held. Even now, the way of thinking about the examinations and the mental attitude just before the examinations may be useful. You may think that reading manga just before an important exam is like reading ……, but why not try reading a classic exam manga to relieve your tension and look back on your past efforts?
